Quotes from my stealer....opinions??

Okay.....having some issues with my recently purchased lr3....took it to the local Land Rover dealer to get things sorted out. I had the following symptoms. A hum from the driveline and a clunk when going over bumps and when you firmly tap the brakes.

This was the diagnosis and pricing....let me know what you think please...all prices in USD

Reservoir, coolant recovery- replace due to bad sensor for the low coolant light
labor 208.50 parts 93.08 Misc 14.60 Tax 8.80 Total 324.98

Fog lamp cracked lens
labor $55.60 Parts $208.55 Misc. $3.89 Tax $17.37 Total $285.41

Front Lower Control Arm...Replace due to bushings and ball joints loose
Labor $347.50 Parts $342.37 Misc $24.33 Tax $29.98 Total $744.18

x2 because both lower control arm bushings and ball joints are loose

Replace both sides front tie rod kits due to freeplay
Labor $278.00 Parts $298.28 Misc $19.46 Tax $25.97 Total $621.71

alignment front and rear $172.07

Differential Assy (Front) - Replace due to making grinding/ humming noise
Labor $764.50 Parts $1421.24 Misc $35.00 Tax $119.05 Total $2339.79

My local independent swapped out my lower control arms with refurbs on each side -

$250 each part
$145 each side labour

$100 alignment

The refurb parts carried the same 12 month 12000 mile warranty as new.

If they are already in there doing the control arms, I would expect there to be a break on the labour cost for the tie rods. When I was having my control arms done, I also had the wheel hubs replaced (wheel bearings) for exactly this reason.

Of course it may be that the LR dealerships don't work this way and just quote off the sheet which is why a good independent is worth getting to know.

I found new lower control arms with ball joints installed for $279 for the pair shipped for free. I am going to go that route. My biggest issue is the differential. I can't afford it right now and was wondering if I could maybe put a heavier gear lube in it if that would quiet it down a bit and maybe it would last a little longer

You *can* find some very cheap parts if you look hard enough. I don't always go for the "cheapest" though unless I am happy with their provenance especially when dealing with braking or suspension components. Pattern parts don't always have the same degree of QC - try and stick with someone who stands behind their product if faulty.
