Of course it should be by rail. The other thing is why does it take some lorry drivers 2 miles to overtake another lorry FFS and cause a massive tailback all for the sake of going 1/2 mph faster than the other one Global Warming.... I'm luvvin it
Doesn't have to be by motorway. Want to move something large from Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh. No train station. There is one 20 miles away in Mallaig but by rail, you have to from Inverness via Perth to Glasgow Queens Street. From there its north up to Mallaig.
Or, by road go south down West side of Loch Ness, two hours away! Much more efficient, much cheaper and, well, more sensible!Ben

Perspective time ...there are roughly 500,000 HGV's in the UK ....and 33,000,000 cars
So, if anything we should all go by train
BTW ...I went on The Ghan from Adelaide to Alice Springs 20 year ago this month ...the train was 686 metres long 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021
Having said that the longest traffic "jam" I was stuck in was about 1/2 a mile long, and took 5 minutes, if that, to get through. And that was the height of rush hour!
God I love Scottish roads!Ben

Especially if you add to that the fact that most cars are only at 20% capacity of load space (assuming most have 5 seats), if HGV's ran around at 20% of capacity they would all go bust.
The problem with the trains is that they deliver fiat quality/alfa reliabilty at Aston Martin prices I believe that every human has a finite number of heart-beats. I don't intend to waste any of mine running around doing exercises.

So it's your fault then What kind of transport management lets a vehicle go back empty when there are a large number of illegal immigrants desperate to get back to Dover 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

We do have a rail network, runs from Crick to Scotland, and solely for trailer freight movement running 24/7. ES tried to expand the service but were blocked by powers be, I think the service topped out last October with nearly 800 trailers moved by rail. Not alot you can do when the customer won't pay for the service though, still massively cheaper by road and at the moment only Tesco is the big player willing to pay the premium for rail through ES

fiat quality/alfa reliabilty at Aston Martin prices
i have to disagree with that SJR, Fiat quality is actually pretty good these days, just take a look around a new 500, and ALpha reliability has come a long way too, maybe in the 80's and 90's but modern alphas are as reliable as anything else,
I'll give you the AM prices though one wife.......livid

Mav,
There is a very picturesque rail station in Kyle of Lochalsh, the journey from Inverness to Kyle is one of the best in the country.
The normal way to move large items in the Highlands is by sea, especially port to port.

Canals go by lots of houses, maybe Tesco, Asda, Ocada et al should start using them
Not much good for a standard container though as it would be resized at the first lock, bridge, tunnel.........
Jason might like that, the challenge would be overtaking ducks end of an era ....... maybe a Defender when it appears.......

Ah canals - can just see the fresh produce packhouses saying to Tesco's - 'you can have that load of lettuce tonight by road or a week on Tuesday by environmentally friendly canal'
Also spend my days in a 'repmobile' on the A1 and can't believe the death wish of some drivers when they tailgate an artic or sit in outside lane doing 60 next to an artic in fast moving traffic. As for reps in BMW's - seems many leave there brains on the kitchen table when they leave home ......some should get Darwin awards
Nver mind abnormal roads,,,,why do we have to have rolling roadworksClub RLD spare wheel protection
Club RLD skid plate
Club its all black
Club D3 - it's gone
Club D4 - just arrived and still all black
