One filament = side light
Other filament = brake light Life is what you make it.

I've had both low level brake light (normal) bulbs blow within a couple of weeks of one another, in just over a year. Any more than this, then I'd be thinking EXCESSIVE FAILURE RATE.......... I have noticed that if you put a voltmeter across D3 battery (when eng running), mine is usually around the 15v mark, most previous cars I've had have usually shown 13.5v ish........this could have something to do with more regular filament failures.

sorry scolliss didnt mean that, the side light beneath the low level brake light also has a twin filament that seems to be redundant if this is the case i'm just going to swap em until my led's arrive

Ummm, interesting, see what you mean now as I just went and had a look. Never looked at my lights that closely.
My guess is that it is probably economies of scale and buying power by LR when making the car. Buying 100% double filament bulbs in the volumes they do works out cheaper than buying 50% double and 50% single filament.
Or maybe even earlier than that the manufacturer of the light units themselves fit the bulbs but the same economies of scale apply. Life is what you make it.

Replaced 2 near side and one off side in 22000 miles. Also noted that the lower of the two lamps also has twin fillament so just swapped.

James Edwards at St Helens (bless em) have told me that there are problems with the bulb fittings and have ordered replacements for me .......
on a positive note they were unable to locate a squeak in the brakes but didnt charge me any labour for replacing the rear pads .......
yet again they impress me with the attention to detail and customer focus. D3 05 SE (old one)
RRS 08 SE (new one)

I've seen quite a few D3s on the roads with a broken brake light. In fact the other day I saw two D3s on the same road with only about 1/4 mile between them - one had one faulty brake bulb and the other had both not working with only the high level lamp working!
This must be a big problem. I must check mine. Matt

I always try to replace bulbs in pairs ie all those on the same circuit, when possible.
Keep the other as a temporary spare.
I believe the slight difference between makes and even manufacturing tolerances causes stress on the 'old' working bulb.
Something like this .

I too have changed twice the brake bulbs in a little over an year... God knows for how long I've been travelling like that... On my previous Peugeot 607 I had a warning in the dashboard for broken bulbs... Very nice!

Ive had 2 bulbs go in the last 6 months.....there must be a wide fault. With no driver warning (on a £40K+ car) its a worrying issue
