Rear Camshaft Seal Leaking - Help!!!

So Boris the 2011 D4 is at a local independent garage for a service and during the course of this they have found that the Rear Camshaft seal is leaking and they are in the process of preparing a quote to replace this.

Am I realistically going to need to sell an organ to do this??

Car has only done 66k and I have opted not to have the belts changed at this service but if they are going to be messing around in that area would it make sense to do these at the same time??

When doing the belts there is no question, in my mind, that you should also replace the oil pump.

The seal can be changed in situ, but you do need the special tools to do so.
It seems a horrible job, but is perfectly possible with the right equipment. Thumbs Up
We have done a few now with no problems.
The injection pump belt has to be removed, so would be changed while doing the seal.

Had the leaking Cam Seal problem last year. Hit and miss whether your LR dealer will do the job without the body off. There is a tool that allows this but I was told it can break and the nuts are often very tight - seems LR don't always torque as carefully as they might ...

I ended up using an Indy in Sussex who did the job with the body off and the belts changed at the same time. Cost me less than the main Dealer quoted me for just the cam seal !

Just out of interest what were you charged and how did you know the seals were on the way out initially??

My main issue is the car hasnt leaked oil at all on the drive which surely it would of been apparent?

What you have to bear in mind is theres oil leaks and theres oil leaks, then theres each different mechanics definition of an oil leak, some will say huh that is just a damp patch and others will try and convice you its niagaria falls.

Quick simple check, car suspension if off road height, decent torch and (do not get under the car no matter how tempting) shine it on the engine and gearbox undertrays any damp patches means yes there is an oil sweat/damp patch/leak, but again its doesnt tell you how bad it is, if its bad at all.
A little oil can go a long way and look very scary to the unwary.

I take it oil pump casings are good on the D4? If so is that the case for all D4's?

Oil pumps in all vehciles will outlast the engine, its only because the casting was weak on the D3 that people say replace it.

I work on trucks and in 35 years have never replaced an oil pump, issues with the associated hardware but never with the pump itself.

Have you or anyone else heard of issues with D4 pumps?

Sarah sorry for the slow reply.

The diagnosis was done when the dealer got it up in the air and could see where the oil was coming from. The comment about a little oil going a long way is spot on - I lost very little. First signs were drops on the lower arms down onto the driveway. Geoff. initially thought it could be coming from the transfer box.

The 110k service, belts and cam seal (body off) at an Indy was £1,300 including VAT. They should have quoted £1,700 but made a quote error. Based on the £1,700 figure the cam seal repair would have been c £400.

Having spoken to a lot of dealers in the South East, only one Dealer was willing to use the LR tool to do the seal with the body on and even then cautioned that they had cases of the tool breaking on them due to the bolt being over torqued. Then it would be a body off job...

The Main Dealer quotes for the cam seal fix only ranged from £730 plus VAT (body on) to £2,500 Plus VAT (body off, with 13 hours labour).

Intriguingly my local Main Dealer also quoted £1,700 for a NS cam cover which was "leaking oil" as well. The master Tech struggled to show me any when I asked to inspect the problem and the Indy who did my cam seal confirmed that they could not see any problem with the cam cover problem at all !

Re the oil pump I was told that it was a D3 problem as Lynall says and mine was not replaced when the belts were done.

And finally Lynall's advice re the amount of oil you are losing is really important. Two Indy garages that specialised in LR told me I could leave my seal problem for 6 months until the belts were due a change as I was not losing much oil. A trusted garage should be able to advise you how urgent your repair is. Obviously I checked the oil levels more regularly during that period to make sure I was not low on oil.

Sorry, but we have been so busy looking after existing customers that we haven't taken on any new ones for nearly 2 years now.
Difficult decision to stay the size we are, to keep the personal touch & level of service, when there is so much good work out there.
