If you think the central diff lock and the electronics work so well, why do LR offer a rear diff lock?

There ain't anywhere I know of that a lockerless D3 hasn't been that a lockered one has ....just takes a little bit longer and a little more effort Thumbs Up

The conclusion was that if I had a rear diff lock, the rear axle could have got me out of there.... (the rear wheels were not spinning..)
Confused huh!

My suggestion to you is that you are not using the systems correctly, and you are making the basic error of not switching the DSC off when driving off-road. This will have a dramatic effect on the level of power and traction available. It does tell you to do this in the manual.

This is indeed very true Gareth, I agree that DSC cuts off the power and you lose momentum.....

But this still doesn't help you in all situations... It really is a difference between having / not having at least a rear diff lock... take a look at this presentation video from ARB... It shows very well the difference....

With all respect Snicker I don't think you quite appreciate fully how the D3 traction system works....for a start the traction control would not allow the D3 to become cross axled as shown by the lesser vehicle in the ARB video Wink

Rear locker does make some situations 'easier', but not necessarily impossible with open diffs, with the right vehicle (D3 Razz ) and skill. The hills in that ARB vid were not that difficult looking and were not driven well.

Oh, I really love the Disco, with all the good things and the bad things about it (suspension fault) and I am very proud of being a Disco owner...
I cannot imagine a better car than the Disco3 (maybe the Disco4?? Wink ) and I would buy another one if I needed another car in my company (but with rear diff lock next time Wink )....

Regarding the video, maybe you are right.... The Patrol doesn't have such a good technology as the Disco and maybe that's why it does need an aftermarket diff lock... Thumbs Up

Thank you catweasel, I appreciate that....

I know the D3 is very capable, my wish is just making it even better than it already is... That's why I thought with a rear diff lock it would be nicer.. but it seems my wishes are set too high...

Yes, welcome to the site cousin Razz

I think it's been explained before but I forget. Why specifically is it such a challenge to retro-fit the LR rear diff loc? I can understand how a 3rd party would be hard to integrate, but it seems some of the components are already in place (like the screen display). Seems they could have a software upgrade for it or something.

What's needed is to replace the rear diff with the locking version - they are different, and even use different type oil for some reason, and to get the rear locking diff control box which plugs in at the side in the loadspace somewhere. Whether the wiring is present for both or not, I don't know, and even if it was, it may not be possible to make it work, even with IDS, but as the vehicle is set up for it in other ways, I'd suspect it may just work, but I'm not about to take the chance, are you?
