| Rear Diff seals....replace? |
|
Hi guys,
Just had the old girl in for a lube change and the mechanic has picked up a leak on the rear seals on the diff. Seems to be fairly serious as he reckons there was less that 500ml of oil left.
Can anyone confirm if these seals are serviceable or does the diff need to be overhauled entirely?

From what I remember from all the issues with whining diffs, seal where replaced with varying success, just make sure you fill the e-diff fitted to al SA cars with the correct oil as shown in my gallery. Hopefully the SA members would comment soon, the question is why is the diff seals leaking make sure to check the breather pipe and valve! A few mods... and keeping it all running...Faultmate MSV2

mine were replaced about 12 months ago - dont need to remove diff Duncan

bit of a run on these at most LR stealers it appears, had small leak on nsr a few weeks ago so changed both sides, all fine and dandy for the next 48 hours then half driveshalft came out of diff on nsr after goosed rear diff.
New OEM rear diff now fitted after 400k miles so cant grumble and me man managed to rob one off Stratstones the same day for a customers car that was waiting to have it done so had to pay VOR price for their replacement, but hey at least I was rollin a day earlier 
BTW you'll be best adviced to get it a 4-wheel alignment done in tollarance setting after despite what the tech says, it will need adjustment. 
The seals can be changed by themselves, you dont need to touch the diff, the half shafts ease out with a bit of persuasion through the rear suspension arms. Also see if you can look at the teeth of the half shafts to see whether there is any undue wear, if so then best change the diff and half shaft as the bearings are goosed in the diff

It might be well worthwhile to replace the bearings, etc. at the same time, anytime you are considering replacing seals, etc. Especially if you have a lot of miles on it.
