Rear Lower Tailgate Alignment

Hi All

My lower rear tailgate is slightly out of alignment and there is a knock as you close it which is bound to wear the locks over time.

With the lower door open I have tried slightly loosening and resetting the hinge bolts but they are either too loose or too tight and I just can’t get it to work.

It looks like there are two holes through the rear lower door metalwork the line up with the hinge bolts when the lower door is closed?

Has anyone removed the external lower trim to access the hinge mounting bolts like this before?

Assume the trim clips in like all the other trim but would hate to yank it off for nothing..

Cheers
