Rear Mounted Winch

Hi Everyone,

Just finished my rear mounted winch, Myself and a buddy of mine an autocad/engerneering type designed winch mounting tray to hold the winch an albright solonoid and the radio remote electronics, it was designed to mount on the toe bar plate with four M20 bolts.

After design i got the 8mm steel plate laser cut so that all the bits would key together and be strong. The peices of plate were then welded togther and then off to the galvanisers. I then painted the whole arrangement with hamerite satin black ( a mistake i think, the paint is not sticking to the galv very well)

The winch gets its power from my existing power outlet on the rear or the D3, and so as not to loose the usefulness of this output i fitted an additional one on the winch mount. There is towing eyes fitted to the underside of the mount.

The winch is a tabor 9k, i used to have it fitted to the front of the D3 until i changed it for hydraulic one, It wasent really up to the job on the front but will be fine for occational use on the back. Actually its a bit knackered, i think the gearbox is on the way out. But it will do for now till i have finnished testing the idea.

Pictures in Gallery as always.

Vehicles following your car shouldn't miss the bright paint job on the mounting tray.

Tounge firmly in cheek - it would have looked (edit: good) in a DayGlo Orange too!!

Top job, Chris.

* first ran a bearing (design failure in original engine)
* second had a failure of the water outlet on top of the engine (pls check yours)

I did measure it and took a line from the diff up at an angle and the way it looks it shouldent affect the angle still only time will tell, its just a trial at the moment.

It is mounted quite high.

it dosent really matter if i bang it on the ground, that's the grounds problem.

Quick question for you Chris !

If you need to tow a trailer, can you easily remove the winch, or is it a more “permanent” fixture ??

It just bolts on instead of the ball, it only takes 5 min's.

i was thinking i would just put it on for off roading events. i would be towing trailers most weeks.

Gotcha !!

So I’m guessing that the power is supplied via the DC socket you have mounted on the rear bumper.

So it's just a case of plug in / plug out right ??

I have to ask what’s next & how do you even come up with these ideas ??
