Rear park sensors not working

My rear park sensors quit working a while ago, but my wife is keen to have them working again. A few years ago, one sensor (rear NS outer) failed, but I didn’t want to take the bumper off so I just left it. From memory I think a 2nd one failed some time later, and now the whole system is dead.
My iid tool shows these 2 faults:

Parking Aid
B1B57-11 (2F) Front sensors power circuit - General electrical failure - circuit short to ground
B1B58-11 (2F) Rear sensors power circuit - General electrical failure - circuit short to ground

Curiously my car has never been fitted with front sensors, only rears??
I’ve got the rear bumper off, and have fitted a new wiring loom (from under the rear light cluster to the 4 sensors), and also fitted 4 new aftermarket sensors, but it’s still not working.
The orange light (above the centre console) flashes when I start the car. The rear sounder beeps when I put the auto box into reverse but there is no response from the sensors when I reverse.
I’ve got the rear trim panel off so have full access to the parking module, I’m thinking of buying a new module but wondered if it’s possible to test my module before buying another one.
Has anyone got any suggestions of any other checks I could try?
Thanks, Will

I would like to think you may have enough bits to get it working

Clear codes, test, AC my different codes appear?

Between black and brown wires should be at least 5v

Get rid of the 1 or 2 known duff old sensors.

Maybe unplug all sensors leaving just a loom. Clear codes. Put in reverse. Have the short codes gone?

They fit 1 sensor at a time, until the sort code appears

Hi Will,
I had some fun with faulty aftermarket sensors and had to get OEM ones to get it working.
Details of the process here:

Good luck

Thanks for the advice. I’ve now got plenty of (aftermarket) sensors to try as I got impatient waiting for a set to arrive in the post and bought a 2nd set, so now I’ve got 8 new, plus 1 new one I had previously. And I’ve got 4 old ones, which may be duff?
Anyway, when you (Pete K) say 5v between brown and black….is that at the multiplug behind the NS light cluster? With reverse selected, I’m not getting any dc voltage difference across brown and black? I think power is going to the parking module though, as there is 12v across pins 1 and 16 coming into the module. Continuity seems ok too between the module plug and the plug by the light cluster.

Unplug the bumper loom and see if you have power in the car side (brown and black) with ignition on

If the voltage goes when the bumper loom is plugged in, that is the fault.
Unplug 1 sensor at a time until the voltage remains present. Replace any sensors that are reducing the voltage to zero

Hi Pete,
With the bumper loom unplugged and the car in reverse, there is no power at the car side of the multiplug (under the light cluster) ie, there is 0v across brown and black.

Then, With the uppermost multiplug disconnected at the parking module(power feed to module), there is 12v on the multiplug coming to the parking module.(across pins 1 & 16)

So my thinking is power is getting to the parking module, but no power is going out to the sensors (or the rear bumper loom (and my car never has front sensors anyway)
Hence I suspect a new parking module is needed?

It does sound like it.

In 90% of cases, faulty sensors cause that fault codes. But I guess one of them has damaged your module.

On my D3, I had a tiny nick in one of the wires, which when water penetrated it stopped all the rear sensors from functioning.

It was under full warranty at the time and the dealer took ages to source the problem as it wasn’t visible.

Hope you get it fixed easily. Thumbs Up

Hello LT, that’s interesting, was the pinhole you found in the rear loom ? (in the bumper wiring loom). I’ve heard of a few people having problems with the rear bumper loom, so I decided to buy a new rear loom, even though mine passed continuity tests., I had a wiring fault with my electric park brake last year, and eventually tracked it down to a tiny pinhole in the wiring under the passenger rear seat.

The dealer found it eventually, somewhere on the rear loom. They spent ages trying to work out why the system was faulty.

When dried out it all worked perfectly, but as soon as there was a bit of water ingress it would fail. Apparently it was a barely noticeable nick in the outer casing of one wire. Probably caused by a stone when driving off road.

Just to close the loop on this one….I got a 2nd hand parking module from eBay and got it fitted. Initially it made no difference and the faults remained. I unplugged the module and plugged it back in and it started working. One sensor doesn’t register the distance on my Gap iid tool, but all 4 sensors are definitely working. They all make a clicking noise and emit a pulse, noticeable to the touch.
Thanks to all for helping with this one. Cheers, Will
