REAR PARKING SENSOR FAULT |
|
hi there everyone
Last week my rear parking sensors have started to fail. Its not the normal 'long beep' as if something is triggering the sensor. All was absolutly fine, then the otherday put it into reverse as normal, then a higher pitched 'beep' was heard (constant for about 5 seconds), then the PDC light on the dash started to flash ????
The front sensors work fine, it just does this when the rears are engaged. checked the sensors for muck and the conections everything seems ok.
It does not do it 100% of time but probably 90%
Does anyone have any ideas about this

Not had the problem but check there are no cracks in the plastic housing that might let water in.
One of them might have just died so get a new one and try in each location till fault goes or just change the lot - its just money

Hi daisydolittle
Afraid I had this.
Fix was - rear bumper removal & new wiring loom
Upside though - the radio has never worked better.

I'll second that, had intermittent rear sensor fault myself, bumper off, new loom fitted, problem sorted. Took about an hour to do myself and I'm no expert! Think loom was about £24 from the stealers! Do a search on forum for bumper removal, found some quite good instructions on here somewhere.

For about a week now i've had the same problem as daisydolittle except it goes into fault 100% of the time when i select reverse. How do we establish if it's a faulty sensor or faulty wiring loom? I'm assuming i need to to purchase one sensor and try each position to see if the fault disappears, the only problem is if more than one sensor is faulty. Do i need to have a dealer diagnose the fault?

Get down on your knees and see if you can here the sensors 'click'
Identify which ones dont click.
Remove the bumper and check wiring to silent sensors. Not a big job, only takes 30-45 mins
If wiring appears OK, swap the dead sensor with a known working one. If it starts working, you need a new sensor.
If it still doesnt work, you have a wiring issue
Just to note that if all 4 sensors are not clicking, check the fuse firstly.
If OK, it could be a broken feed or earth wire, as they all share a common feed and earth
And finally, PDC wont work if the handbrake is on. Car needs to be left in reverse gear with the ignition on for them to be active
No need for diagnostics from a dealer etc

My D3 has developed the same fault with slight difference. Front PDC works ok until you select reverse. I then get the long beep and the PDC light starts flashing, but it also knocks out the front PDC. You have to swtich ignition on and off to reset fronts. As soon as you select reverse the cycle starts again.
So it seems as though my rear sensors are at fault. How exactly do you do the click test. Do you need engine running?
I have noticed that one of my rear sensors is pushed in 8mm as well...

I'd start by rectifying this Andrew

I had the same problem... tried the following;
diags highlighted a faulty sensor... got it replaced.. problem persisted
tried a new control box..... problem persisted
tried a new wiring loom... problem still persisted
scratched my head for a while..problem still persisted
went back to basics and checked all the sensors again (triing the sensor individually on the spare wiring loom as I do not have the fancy diag equipment) to find the new sensor that was originally replaced was faulty
got a further new sensor and problem was fixed
plus point I can now remove bumper and refit in record time
so my advice would be to buy a new sensor or two from TLO, then play swap out on the rear..
hope this helps
Mart Still miss my D3

Easy to fix!
But on mine the problem is a little different, the fault is only sometimes present, so I can't verify the sensors. It just happens on the bad moments, yee, I love my D3!
Maybe I'm gonna verify the contacts and the wiring for breaks of water.
