Rear propshaft to rear differential bolt issue

Hi all,

Hoping someone may be able to help.

I tried to remove the rear propshaft this morning and all went well until I reached the bolts on the rear differential, which I can’t get to budge despite soaking in wd40. Bearing in mind I’m working off ramps on my drive; does anyone have any ideas on how to get these to budge? There isn’t enough clearance for a breaker bar, wondering if a good 3/8 impact wrench might be able to squeeze in there, rotating the propshaft as you go.

Any help would be appreciated otherwise it’s a trip to independent for a fitting.

Cheers
Mike

Hi Mike,
My brother and I replace the propshaft on my 2006 HSE last November. IIRC I managed to do the fronts but couldn't get anywhere undoing the rears myself (shiny a Censored e weekling). Little brother (mechanic) steps in and job gets done very easily. I can't recall whether he used a 3/8 battery impact gun or the 1/2 windy gun. You'll struggle on ramps as you will need to be able to turn the rear wheels to gain access to all the pinion bolts. Hope this helps.

Thanks David. It’s some consolation that it’s not just me with this issue Thumbs Up

Out of curiosity, did you have access to a garage lift or were you jacking onto axle stands?

Thanks again,
Mike

Mike,
A 4 poster ramp with the central rails so that we could get the rear wheels in the air.

Did mine on the floor, using a hammer to beat the spanner got them to start moving then whilst tight was easy from then on.

I hadn’t thought about the torx spanner option - i’ll give that a go.

Cheers Thumbs Up

I had to use a pit and breaker bar to loosen them prior to using axle stands and high suspension.
