Rear Right brake sticking

Hi Guys n Girls,

I am having issues with the rear right brake sticking and generating massive heat buildup. I have replaced the caliper guide slider pin but no change. I have cleaned the piston after extending it 1/4 inch and recompressing, again no change. How does the pressure release once your foot is taken off the brake pedal? TIA

When you release the brake pedal, the piston in the calliper will stop pushing on the pad. There is no return spring as such, but the slight elasticity in the piston seal is usually enough to release pressure on the pad.

Had this happen on a car, it was the brake hose, it had collapsed inside causing it to act like a one way valve. L633 Defender

but we know calipers on the rear of D3 and known to be sticky

new ones are from £40 on ebay

The seals are designed to give just the right amount roll back to take the pressure off the pads. Any sticking of the piston will negate that action.

Quick Update...

Update, I removed the disc and dusted out the EPB stuff in there, pushed the piston right back in again and checked the rubber seal, all good. Fitted new pads and will now take it for a run out...

I recently changed discs and pads. First the rear right and then the rear left caliper started to bind. I tried to clean, lube, polish, exercise, you name it. But in the end, new calipers has been the answer. It seems that when the pistons are retracted far back in the caliper that some residue within the caliper cavity restricts piston motion. Surely somebody with lots of patience and skill could disassemble the caliper and renovate it. But for me, wheighing effort and cost together, the most rational solution was new calipers.

And it solved my problem. The brakes have worked perfect since.

Cheers Dartanjang, but as an Ex Royal Engineer i feel i should be able to service them and as you said the final steps are to swap out the calipers... while i have time on my hands and the "Honey Do"list is short ill keep working on them...

Laughing Funny that you would say that. I have exactly the same background. And to be honest, I bought two sets of seal kits for the rear calipers when I bought the discs and pads. So there was an inital idea to also do it myself. But then reality caught up and stole away all the spare time (creepy how that happens) and I gave in to the easy but a little more expensive solution.

Have fun! I envy you a bit as the rewarding feeling when it's back in good shape is really nice.

many people think they can service them.

But 6 months later, they say F$ck it. And buy new ones Laughing


I can tell you a new seal and piston does not work in the long run!

However, if you are an engineer, just behind the seal is a deep groove.
If you use a sharp tool to clear all the rubbish/dirt out, you might find it sorts it for free!

Personally I would buy 2 new callipers & leave them in the box..

Strip a calliper, if you see an obvious issue then see if you can rectify it easily, if so then great, either send the callipers back or keep the min the garage until they stick again.

If you strip it can cant see anything jumping out at you, or if you break something, you have a new calliper waiting for you.

with the price of them, you may as well stick them on the car. Little point keeping them 'in stock'.

You can play with the old ones and try and refurb
