After how many miles is yours asking for a service, J77?

My DS started prompting me at ~14.5k miles, at which point I booked it in at my dealer. My dealer couldn't see my car for another 1.5 months by which point my car had completed 17k miles. Claimed service interval on the car is 21k miles or two years (whichever is sooner):

Land Rover wrote:

Nope.

The algorithm JLR use to calculate the oil dilution percentage is, at best, a guess and has a tendency to overestimate. The Service Indicator Message is triggered when the estimated oil dilution percentage reaches 6.1%. I sent a sample of my engine oil off to be analysed by Millers Oils and it came back with an oil dilution value of 2.6% and showed high levels of wear metal analysis (314ppm Fe). I'm still trying to get hold of the dealership to see if they've got the telemetry data from my car to correlate the estimated percentage with actual percentage.

It is generally considered that anything > 2% dilution is enough to throw oil out of spec. If you put the wrong oil in your car, it would invalidate the warranty. However, JLR seem quite happy for us to drive around with grossly diluted oil in our cars. I would not run a modern diesel Land Rover beyond the warranty period given my recent experiences with them.

I'm also in dispute with JLR with this over why they deducted this service from my service plan when this is a fault with the car, as far as I'm concerned. According to the flowchart in JLRP00100, my car should have an oil filter change under the "Service Indicator and Oil Dilution" programme.

There are people on the Disco Sport forum reporting their cars are asking for a service after only 6 or 7k miles. Shocked

Meanwhile, JLR don't seem to have a solution for this.

Mines done 3379. Nothing displayed on the car dash only the app, I’ve been informed by a fellow D5 owner that no 3.0 TD6 has had oil dilution, yet. Hopefully a sensor or a software update.

United Kingdom 2011 Discovery 4 3.0 SDV6 XS Auto Baltic BlueDiscovery 4

As the original author of this post, my closing thoughts are this:

As I said at the outset, I am not a D5-hater or out to bash it, infact it saddens me that I feel unable to love this car and had my cheque book ready and waiting for the Sept 2016 launch (and, even the launch photos and press didn’t put me off, it was only when I saw the car for myself in the flesh). I am also one of the few who doesn’t despise the rear end. Actually, like it or loathe it, the rear has far more road presence and personality (and instantly recognisable as a Discovery) than the front or profile – I saw one of the road this morning and to me it honestly looks like a car which started as a full-height discovery but which someone squashed down on the top resulting in this squat, unremarkable shape. Just my opinion, of course.
But, above all, the sheer arrogance of JLR with the price rise has alienated me not only from the D5 but perhaps also from the brand (the last chance of a reprieve would be if they get launch a Defender which re-captures all the alienated D3/D4 folks). I was genuinely procrastinating like mad on whether or not to trade my D4 to a D5 (hence this post and my other in the General section) and I was genuinely open to being convinced to making the switch, because let’s not pretend that the D4 is without its faults too and the thought of running it beyond the 10-year LR Extended Warranty, dismantling the car for timing belt services, etc.has literally given me sleepless nights. But the price rise has killed off any lingering prospect. As mentioned previously, I was in the market for an SE spec-ed upwards, not to save money but because (a) I strongly prefer the robust grained leather to the more fragile Windsor and (b) the beautiful Acorn/ebony interior colour scheme is bizarrely only available on the SE – I find the Nimbus Windsor plasticky looking and the orange trim is random, the ebony Windsor is better but I hate oppressive all-black interiors which also make the car look claustrophobic. Without being smug, I have honestly yet to see a better interior combination than the Acorn/Nutmeg combo I have on my D4, and every time I set foot back into it after a courtesy car I feel really happy with my choice all over again 
But JLR now asking £2,300 for the SE for no apparent reason (perhaps it’s the premium for now front fogs NOT being standard and all the intestering colours like Monti Red being withdrawn??!!) is unacceptable. It’s clearly a ploy to push people towards HSE and HSE Lux (and renders the SE just a notional model in the way that the S is). Speccing up an SE as I wanted (met paint, sunroof, black pack, privacy, rear cam, 5 year/75k service pack) plus now the additional options of £530 upgrade the LR ‘Enhanced’ Audio junk to the Meridian (which, as others have remarked, I agree is still poorer than the excellent Harman Kardon’s generously fitted on the D4s) and (finally) £525 tracker, basically takes my SE to the same price as an HSE, whereas 6 weeks ago there was still several £000s of daylight. Apart from being (admittedly) p!ssed off, the more depressing thing is that it confirms that JLR are content to target the market of people who probably don’t think as deeply about their cars or choices as the esteemed folks on this forum, who go into a showroom and sign up to a RRS or Evoque and, now, D5 as a lifestyle accessory, and now don’t give a flying shyte about the very people whose patronage to the Discovery over the years has allowed JLR to now be in this position to even be able to evolve the car.

Rant over. Off to Volvo if/when I ever decide to change my D4, even if the XC90 is too low for my GSD (though vastly bigger in the boot’s footprint). The cost of change that Volvo offered on an XC90 is now almost £10k less than the new D5 pricing. To be honest, I might even be more tempted by the gorgeous XC60 and use it as a 2 seater: at least that is a product which gets my pulse racing and which I’m sure if I order I would be filled with the same excitement I had when I ordered my D4, rather than the phlegmatic feeling I fear I would feel if I ordered the D5 (and the ‘sensible’ feeling I might have if I ordered the XC90). But in any case, thanks to the good tips on this forum, I now realise that I am not necessarily off the cliffedge when my D4 tips over 100,000 miles and the LR warranty is unavailable, because Warranty Direct offer (albeit less comprehensive) cover up to 12 years/120,000 miles and, better still, MotorEasy 15years/150,000 miles - both significantly less expensive than the LREW. So, in light of that, spent the weekend washing, waxing, nourishing the leather etc on my D4 and its like a renewal of vows! Smile

Cheers all!
Danny

This will be my last Disco, in light of recent price hikes where my spec has went up by £3k in 6 months including having to add the fog lights which were standard. I will have a look at the Defender replacement if/when it arrives, if that’s not to my liking then it will be Volvo XC90 but I will choose another dealer than the one I went to.

This is sad really. Lot's of LR fans ready to give affection and money to the new D5 but can't, for all kind of reasons...but the increased price is the last straw. Crying or Very sad

It does indeed make me feel very sad. Currently there simply isn't another vehicle that compares directly to the D4. Sad

Desperate explanation from McGovern. If you look at the photos in all the D5 brochures, the orange RCC 361 and silver 768 KAS are both the broad plates of the type about which he his whinging. Clutching. Straws.
