Recommendation for off-road wheels & tyres

I hope this is the right place to ask? - if not maybe a mod can move this post.

After an enjoyable weekend at Rockingham/Tixover I reckon I need a set of wheels & tyres for off-roading.

The problem is that there seem to be many available on ebay but I don't know what size wheels to get, or what tyres ...

Could someone help me out here please?

TIA

Basically your options in the UK are....

17" D3 or RRS rims with 245/70 Cooper STs (All Terrain) or 245/70 Cooper STTs (Mud Terrain)
18" D3 or RRS rims with 255/60 General Grabber AT2s (All Terrain)
19" D3, RRS or FFRR rims with 255/55 Goodyear Wrangler MTRs (Mud Terrain)

There are others but the list above covers what is generally available over here and of sufficient load/speed rating (the 17" Coopers are slightly oversize but not enough to cause any issues)

Slightly Off Topic but has anybody ever had an MTR deform and come off the rim?

Whilst at Rockingham Ed was most disparaging about the MTR's and mentioned that he no longer uses them on his cars as he had two go at virtually the same time. Now im sure Ed was probably attacking a climb at 100+ mph in his Bowler, but he did point out the deformation on mine as i was going round the quarry section. Now i know they do deform and the side wall protection in an MTR is superior, but it got me thinking about there limitations (im fairly sure my bottle would go before the tyre Embarassed )
Im aware that many people use MTR's, so i was just wondering on there experiences of when they actually failed

TIA

Depends what you mean by deform, going far too fast up a steep rocky Moroccan mountain side in my D3 cut one and put golf ball sided bulges in two others. All three were aired down at the time (just driven out off the sand) and two with bulges went on to do another seven thousand miles or so before I changed them, none of them came off the rim

I think Ed was sugesting that a higher profile for off roading was more appropriate, which I am sure most would agree its a shame they don't do MTR's for 18" rims

No tyre is indestructible .....but MTR's are about as tough as they'll come for the D3, I've been running them permanently for about 10,000 miles now and been off-road many times without tyre structure issues.

Ed probably can't get them with a decent discount anymore that's all Wink

I drove to Morocco did the comp and drove back on MTR's and never had a puncture or any trouble with them, in fact the same wheel and tyres are still on the Blue Pearl. Just respect the Kit and you wont have any troubles Thumbs Up

I have punctured 2 MTR's whilst of roading. Pinched the side wall on a rock and holed a sidewall on a nasty branch of a fallen tree whilst winching in very muddy conditions.
In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

I didn't notice any problem while in Tixover - It was when I cleaned of the mud n stuff I found a large 'flap' of rubber on the FOS tyre sidewall (not down to the carcase but bad enough) plus a 10mm lump out of the rim and a 3" score (about 3-4mm deep and wide) on one of the wheel 'spokes'. I guess I caught a bit of rock with it somewhere Mad

Slightly off topic again...has anybody been running the General Grabbers yet? Wondering peoples impression of them so far on & offroad performance and quality/durability.
I'm not so good at giving advice...may I offer you a sarcastic comment instead?

Got mine fitted yesterday and they look great, as for performance I will let you know in a few weeks. Only one thing I have noticed up to now is a slight hum on the road, but nothing really.

Had my AT2s on for about 5000 miles....
On road I have not noticed any differnce except for a slight hum and maybe a drop in mpg...

Off road....difficult to comment as I guess you would need to do something that caused a problem with road tyres and then compare....that said, I got stuck on the Wiltshire lanes recce in a sticky patch which I thought would have been quite simple...

They are tougher and I suppose I am less worried about that large bit of flint or tree root when off road...

Ive been running 245/70 R17 Cooper STs since i put them on "temporarily" at xmas. They have done about 15,000miles, still have almost full tread and the noise level is only slightly greater with a bit of a hum. Not noticed any handling problems. Off Road they are excellant. Word of advice, if you get the OWL coopers, make sure the white lettering is facing inwards. If it faces outwards, it looks good for a short while but after its been scuffed offroad they look a mess !!
