Out of the blue yesterday my D4 starting to shudder regularly about every 5 seconds. A bit like it is about to stall.
The judder lasst about a second then all is fine but five seconds later another judder.
Does it when idling, driving, in gear, out of gear - all the time basically. If driving then there is a loss of power while it judders.
Any ideas anyone?

Hi Dave, no expert however members have reported crank angle sensors issues and there is a TSB out for certain VIN. Do a search and have a read
Well a very unexpected outcome. I was driving to the dealers to get their opinion and diagnostics, when the car stopped and showed a yellow engine warning light. Turned if off and on again and got a red battery light (not had that before). Car started and a couple of minutes later did the same thing.
Now I knew the battery was four years old so before trying the dealer I changed plan, returned home, bought a new battery , fitted it and hey presto - engine smooth again.
So a great result but the symptoms would never have made me think battery, especially as I had no low battery warning and the car started.
Thanks for the suggestion Motolite – I was all ready to mention a TSB.

All was well for two weeks and then it starts juddering again. Exactly the same symptoms, a couple of seconds juddering every 6 or 6 seconds.
So it obviously wasn't the battery that fixed it last time so it must have been the disconnection of the battery (to change it). Sure enough, disconnected the battery for a couple of hours and it is back to normal.
Very strange. I have put a 10mm spanner in the glove box so I can disconnect the battery when away from home and I guess I just monitor it. No point in going to the dealers when it is OK.

Yeah it'd probably worth checking for codes, it sounds like it could be the crank sensor issue that quite a few people have had.

Are you sure it's not an alternator or charging issue which could wreck the new battery. Have you checked voltage.2005, TDV6 S, Auto, 190k miles, owned from new, V8 Brake Upgrade, Nancom Evo, RLD protector, BAS EGR blanking & Remap, separate ATF cooler, changing all the fluids ahead of time.
It had a year six service last week (not at Land Rover) and the report shows charging tested and OK, battery OK etc. I don't suppose they would have checked fault codes but if they did they obviously didn't see anything wrong.
It has had a problem for about t3 months with the fuel gauge showing zero. Dealer thinks that is a problem with the sender wiring which there is a technical guidance note about, but it is £300 to have them look at it and no promise it will fix it.
Doesn't feel like they are related unless it is the engine management unit that works both or something.
I might go and check the voltage myself though.

If you have low fuel due to the sender misreading it might be that the car is juddering on purpose to make you go and get some fuel.
I don't know how true this is but when I got mine I was told that Disco's do this....
Well it all ended up with the car refusing to start and me calling the AA. I put 3 gallons of fuel in first but the the car was behaving like it had no fuel. The gauge of course said it had none, but then it has said that on and off for weeks so I don't know why this time it stopped it starting. All the symptoms though, low compression so really fast run on the starter.
AA man put in another 2 gallons to no effect. However he then disconnected the battery. Gauge came up for a few seconds, car started and then gauge went back to zero.
So I gave in and drove it to the dealers.
They did the electrical repair on the tank senders that is described in the technical advice note. £285 and it all seems OK now.
I can only hope the juddering was, as Nick H suggests, related to the car thinking it was out of fuel.
