Re reliability, my D4 is shade under 7 years old & now 48k miles, previously owned by my folks so driven gently and garaged most of its life until I got it. It hasn’t had any problems in that time apart from needing a new battery. Shocking reliability for a LR!!!
Now I’ve torn it!!!

I am not sure what peolpe talk about .... I seen Beemas Merc and all small crap cars by the side of the road many time all over Europe hardly ever D3 or 4
once RRS and FFRR but I guess it was a case of something silly since those are driven by ball kicking muppets

Im on the fence on this one.
I have had my D3 a little over 2 years, bought with just 29k miles on and based on the interior it had an easy life. Now at just 50k miles its had.
'Lectric Seat Rattle - They all do that, did the fix and its been fine since.
Clogged MAP sensor, now I know its easy, but still......
Turbo Actuator Failure, Had to argue like hell to get warranty to pay, they did phew.
Both side wheel bearings, ok thats a wear item but it feels a bit early?
Gearbox issues which HOPEFULLY was the oil getting cooked when I got stuck, change then a flush seems to have sorted it (I wasn't being silly trying to get unstuck and the D3 should cope with that IMO)
Water in passenger footwell, no it wasn't the roof drain, possibly over zealous jet washing.
Total failure and limp mode taking kids to school, scary, traced to a BL**DY Brake light bulb.
Its a lovely car but im a bit paranoid about it now. I had a Freelander 1 Auto TD4 for over 100k miles/10 years and it only suffered a Turbo hose/VCU bearings and a few bushes all well over 80k miles.Disco 3: Lotus Elise S1: Ferguson T20: Audi A2

I've had my old bus 13 years and it has 220,000 on the clock. Its used hard but well maintained and has proved to be the most stupidly reliable car ever. I've just had a new clutch and DMF fitted which is probably half its value, but it does everything I could want out of a car and it still makes me smile every-time I drive it.
Service and maintenance record is key. New Defender L663 110 SE (known as Noddy!)
Sold Volvo XC90 R-Design (known as Basil)
Sold - D4 HSE (Known as Gerty)
No longer the Old Buses original owner
231,000 miles and counting
05 S manual owned from March 2005
D4 Face lifted
Still original injectors and turbo
V8 Front brakes
BAS Remap, Allisport Intercooler and deCat
EGRs blanked
T-Max split charge
Hanibal Expeedition rack
Prospeed ladder
Duratrac tyres
IID BT
BAS FBH control

My engine was stupidly reliable, right up until about 500m before this parking spot.

Then it wasn’t.
PS Service record means jack squat when those little non tabbed bearing shells start to rotate. It’s all a big fat lottery.
