The three most dependable auto brands in the U.S. are now Lexus, Porsche and Kia, according to a new J.D. Power study. The three least dependable are Jaguar, Alfa Romeo and Land Rover.

Wasn’t there much whooping of joy a few years ago when LR moved from bottom to 3rd from bottom in the reliability tables? Whistle Whistle

I think you have to take some factors into account when you compare reliability. Land Rovers offer cars that are dual purpose these days. They are a premium brand, which means lots of toys and lots of buttons. They also retain their ability to traverse all sorts of terrain better than most other offerings. Again, this comes with complicated systems and more buttons. It's a simple fact of life that things have the potential to go wrong, so the more "things" you have, the more things can go wrong. Want more reliability? Get a skate board.

In any case, vehicles in general are an awful lot more reliable than in the past. A simple vehicle such as an original Mini was vastly more unreliable than a Land Rover of today. (Cheaper to fix though.) So the gulf between the most reliable and the least reliable isn't really that big.

So, having said that (used up all the excuses) and acknowledging that Land Rovers of today are more reliable than they were 20 odd years ago, I'm surprised that LR don't attack their reliability issues with gusto. If I were the boss of Land Rover, I'd be telling them to over-engineer everything. Yes, there's a cost to that. But it is what is needed now.

Some may recall the VF750 motorcycle, a V4 engined motorbike produced by Honda. It proved about as reliable as a Michael Fish weather forecast and Honda's reputation suffered greatly in an area that Honda prided themselves on. So Honda withdrew it and introduced the VFR750. Over-engineered and ultra reliable. Made a fortune from it and it's derivative still sells today. Yet Land Rover produces cars that have suspension and brakes that inevitably over a period fail due to the size and weight of their vehicles. Go figure.

I ran a VF750FD for a couple of years it was a good machine and we went everywhere on it.
It was something like my 10th Honda and I had had enough of camchain/camshaft issues, so bought a Kawasaki 1100 which promptly twisted the crank and holed a piston!

It would also help if LR addressed their customer service and dealer network. It would have a positive impact on perception.
