Reliability and problems with other makes.

What experiences have people had?

1. Mazda MX5 -gearbox rebuilt after 4 years following oilseal leak!

2. Subaru Forester: 2yrs old: New central diff, new gearbox following a lot of mucking about. -Never did hear why.

3. Smart Roadster- water ingress (wetsuit is a good idea) though now fixed. Starter motor just went after 2 years.

4. Toyota Prius: Rust under paintwork after 2.5years! Rearbrake discs just replaced at 2.5 years due to rust, warped and brake material failure (acted like a lathe on one side) Trim rattles are appalling in cold weather. Fuel consumption 25% higher than declared figure.

5. Previous Discovery 2; Electrical problems with locks after 3 years , otherwise none at all.

Citroen BX - fuel tank fell off, but apart from that reliable.

Citroen XM - the only thing that never broke was the bonnet catch, dog of a car but very comfy.

Volvo V70 - Heater motor, electric window switch, ht leads. in 150000 miles not bad. Yawn sorry I was falling asleep there.

Disco 1 200tdi - 110000 miles, clutch x 2, very reliable.

Disco 2 V8 - Radiator x 2, Rear diff, ACE pump, suspension compressor, fan pulley, leaked like a shower cubicle, steering joints, steering box, then the big one, the V8 engine dropped a cylinder liner and died. What an absolute pile of cr*p that car was, BUT I LOVED IT Shocked

2005 Discovery 3 TDV6 S Manual Cairns BlueDiscovery 3

BMW 318 tds... 185K in three years .... nothing wrong
Volvo V70 2.5 ....120k in three years ....nothing wrong
Mini One... ( Car 80!)... 2k sold back to dealer, 5 Faults.... including a fuel\ tank guage that read full when empty and vise versa..constant low speed stalling, and various other electrical niggles...
Landrover Freelander.... oh dear... probably the worst car we've ever owned... Ran away at 27k..... eats tyres, gear box from a montego, panels made by BacoFoil, 19 mpg, brakes by the forestry commision, and TWO manifolds...
TD5,...52k in 12 months, panel gaps out of line on wings/bonnet, water ingress in dash, apart from that I LOVED IT..
TDV6...45k in 15 months Hand brake warning light twice, new CJB, suspension enhancement, two system upgrades, rear tail gate struts loose, but caught in time thanks to this site, and best of all..... crashed by my dealer during the 15k service.... resulting a new rear tailgate !!!! "Mr Twizzle, one of our mechanics has accidently reversed into a RRS that was being PDI'd, you ought to see the RRS..... do not worry it'll be better then new when you get it back!... "....good job i've a sense of humour....

Would i buy another D3, yes....

I've also owned a Buell M2 Cyclone, (awfull) Triumph T595, Fantastic and numerous Jap bikes, and few have been faultless....

A mate has bought a VW Toerag V10, and it has been in the garage more then my disco, problems have included toe in wear on tyres and again numerours electrical faults......perhaps these cars are pushing too many boundries..

1. TD5 (manual) 2000 - 122K miles - Diesel leak (common problem), head gasket at 100k miles, new injector wiring harness at 100k miles, various front/rear sunroof leaks - fix one and then a new stream of water comes out of a different part of the roof headlining! Wink

2. TD5 (auto) 2004 - 38K miles - pipe from auto gearbox to oil cooler fractured where it connects to oil cooler. Gradually lost drive while driving along as all the gearbox oil spewed out all over the engine compartment, and all the cars following me. Possible something could have somehow flown up that I drove over, but nobody knows. Recovered to dealer and was driving it home the next day. No other problems. Smile

3. D3 HSE 2005 - 25K miles so far - No major problems. Only once had a park brake fault which cleared on restart. Drivers seat creaking, had a new tilt bracket in, but will be getting them to change the base frame at next service as the new tilt bracket made no difference.
 IE - 05 D3 TDV6 HSE - Zambezi Silver
SA - 07 VW Golf TDI - White - Sold!

Funny how the title of this thread is about 'other makes' and yet most posts include the Disco3 Thud

My father had a Nissan once ...it was a good motor ..only the clutch required changing at about 60k. My worst vehicle was a Vauxhall Cavaliar 1.8GLi.... the engine blew on 70k ...I was also driving my mate's Ford Capri 3.0s when the engine blew....

....I can see a pattern building here. Confused

Australia 2012 Discovery 4 3.0 SDV6 HSE Auto Fuji WhiteDiscovery 4

Heres a synopsis of my life with new cars.

1989 - Honda CRX. 2 years and no problem
1991 -Subaru Liberty (Legacy in some countries) . 4 years and no problem other than warped front discs.
1995 - Subaru WRX. 4 years and no problem other than warped front and rear discs - looks it's a turbo so it gets a caning.
1995 - Honda Civic VTi (Wifes car). 8 years and no problems except for squeaky rear suspension bushes.
1999 - Subaru WRX STi - 2 door. No problems but only driven 15,000km in 5 years (a bit of a collectors item).
2002 - Subaru Outback H6 3.0 lt. 3 years warped front and rear discs, sun roof shattered by cold weather and 2 recalls.
2004 - Mazda 3 SP23 (wifes car). Cruise control doesn't work and the dealer is too dumb to fix it. Transmission was rough at start up but was fixed wit hs/w update.
2005 - Land Rover Discovery 3 - TDV6 HSE. Okay now where do I start.

1. A/C did work on day one. Regassed the next day
2. Blowing blue smoke from the exhaust pipes. Traced to a computer earthing problem and loose connectors on the back of the engine.
3. Engine loss of power. Loose engine connectors.
4. Loss of TR and low range. Corroded connectors.
5. A/C not working again. Regassed and fixed leaking joint
6. TR and low range "not available message" regularly. Loose negative terminal on battery.
7. Tailgate lock broke. Replaced lock and trim that had to be cut to get unlock lock.
8. Rear tailgate strut loose. Fixed my self thanks to this site.
9. Radio locked up. Fixed myself by disconnecting 12V to radio via fuse.
10. SRS warning lamp staying on. Earth problem on ECU.
11. Enhancement program. Fix air compressor valve and s/w upgrade.
12. A/C not working again. Regassed and fixed same leaking joint again.

Is this enough????? Do you see a common fault with my D3 - EARTHING!!

And I still love my D3 even though my wife is sick of me going to the dealer on a monthly basis to get things fixed.

And worse still I lie to everyone who asks me how the big beast is going - "it's going great, not a problem in the world Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed " Just too emabarrased to say it's a Land Rover.

I've only had one other new car.

1999 Subaru Forester Limited.
Only problem was a rear main seal went at 150,000km. Outside the three year warranty period, but Subaru fixed it anyway because they said it shouldn't have happened (and I didn't even ask the question!).

I did replace all the springs and shocks at 130,000km after the rear 'self-adjusting' shock absorbers went. AUD1300 for 4 King springs and Koni Shocks (50mm lift) fitted; as opposed to AUD1000 for the two rear OE shockies (parts only).
 Have a nice day!
