Why are remaps (chips) so expensive?
Just been hunting round the internet looking for 'chip' options. Why are they so expensive? I am making a comparison to the work I've had done on my Nissan Skyline, currently putting out about 650bhp. After purchasing the replacement ECU the charge for the remap was approx £450. Now bear in mind that was a bespoke map, just for my car, live mapped on both a rolling road and normal road driving conditions. So why are the options for the Disco so much more?

I'd say that when you factor in the development costs, hardware, 'risk' and overheads, the price is pretty much spot - on for what the market will stand. TBH, when you're spending upwards of £30k another 1.5% - ish doesn't really make things any more painful

Like any consumer product a chip will be sold at what the market can 'stomach' and the customers perception of quality vs value.
It is true that development costs must be 'clawed' back and that has an impact but there may also be other factors involved liked 'license' fees, warranties and support.
If someone offered to chip your Disco3 or RRSport for £250 would you do it? Or would you rather deal with a more expensive company?
It's all down to consumer choice at the end of the day

I understand what you mean about what the market can stand, and that just another 1.5% isn't that much I was just wondering why mapping this type of engine was more expensive than a GTR engine. Perhaps some of the GTR mapping was offset against buying the ecu or some of the other engine work.

Spoke to a lady at 'Turbochips' yesterday. Aparently there is a discount for forum members and they will redo the map if LR write over it. Sounds like quite a good deal now I've looked in it a bit more closely
