How to remove the 3rd row of seats
Hi all
Am new to the forum and this has probably been asked before.
I just received my new SE TDV6 last week, MY09, brilliant. Previously had a shortie GQ Patrol (19 years), also brilliant, but agricultural in comparison. Any offers???
I had originally ordered an S model as this now comes with air suspension & terrain response as standard. There seemed to be some problem with delivery and I ended up with an SE, a deal I could not knock back.
The downside is that I have 18 inch wheels and an extra row of seats among all the other plusses!
Which is why I have spent the last 15 minutes scratching my head about removing the back seats, and for now replacing with a board to put the fridge slide on.
Any suggestions gratefully received.
Julia

firstly welcome, secondly why do you want to remove the seats. the only benefit you will gain is losing some weight but in the overall scheme of things this is not much. many here have the seats in with drawer systems on top.

Firstly welcome, and congrats with the new vehicle. I think you will find there is nothing similar to the GQ Shorty.
I tend to agree with CatWeasel. No real benefits removing the third row seats, unless you are going to utilise that space for water tanks, etc.etc.etc....Why is the fear of long words called hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia?

If you really want to remove them, and you're feeling strong....
Remove the 4 load retaining rings (held in by Allen bolts - 2 on each side) and the plastic covers over the 3rd row seat base latches (they unclip but you might find the clips snap as you take them off). With these bolts and covers removed the side panels will pull out to reveal the Torx bolts at the side of the 3rd row seats. Then you need to remove the Torx bolts in between the seats, which are under a plastic hinged cover at the front and rear of the mechanisms. With all the bolts removed, now comes the joy of lifting them out - they stay attached together, but kind of flex in the middle making handling even more fun . The best way I found, was to lift 1 side up, then turn the seat assembly around so they are removed through the rear door length ways - they are too wide to remove otherwise, without scratching the sides of the loadspace. You need 2 people to handle them, as they are heavy and awkward to move.Previously:

Thanks All for the rapid replies.
I had considered weight to be a problem, but I am also a bit perplexed as to how to fix the fridge slide without damaging the seat backs. As I do not yet have the time to do any major touring I do not wish to get into box systems at this stage and am considering a piece of carpeted marine ply following your responses.
I am also slightly uneasy about the strength of the standard tyres. General Grabbers I think as soon as these wear out. The dealer was quoting me an exchange price of about $1600 a wheel for 17s with decent AT tyres. Ouch!
Are the wranglers OK for bush touring if the going doesn't get too tough?
Thanks again for the help
Julia
You are right there is a world of difference between this and the GQ. Maybe I won't need to take the anti-inflammatories any more!

You definately scored getting the SE.
The Wranglers are crap tyres but you are right to wait till they wear a bit.
I think the dealer has had a lend of you $1600 for exchange?
That would just be the price to buy.
Take a pucture repair kit for touring, preferably another wheel as you will get more than one pucture.“There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

Wranglers are crap? Other reviews on here seem to rate them highly, and I was about to buy 4!Previously:

We are talking :
1. wear rate (mine managed only 28000kms)
2. puctures, mainly on dirt roads.
3. thin sidewalls, mainly off road (but with mine i backed into a curb. )
They handle well on road but not good for Oz.
Get GG or Yoko Geolandars.“There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€
