How to remove Viscous Coupling on Cooling Fan D3 / LR3
Hi I have a Discovery 3 2005 4.4L v8 Jag engine and I am trying to replace the Water Pump. I am not sure which way the Viscous Coupling needs to be removed for the fan... Can you please advise? Thx Doug

On the TDV6, it is a left hand thread. Pretty sure that the petrol engine would be the sameMy D3 Build Thread
Easy way to tell is to spin the engine and watch the fan rotation. It will rotate such that it tightens the bolt, so all you need to do is unscrew it the other way.
I know some V8's are right hand thread, but not sure about the 4.4 Mark.

Changed my idler a little while ago and the viscous was f tight !!!
Made up a tool to hold the water pump pulley but needed a person to hold this whilst I undone the viscous. Didn't think it was gonna come off it was that tight

They are/should always be f'ing tight. One trick is to give the spanner a good sharp twack with a hammer in the undo direction with the pulley locked by whatever means.Rob Smith

Rob ........ I have removed many viscous fans and yep normally with a good sharp whack it comes undone but mine was refusing to budge for ages , even to the point where it was bending the tool to hold the water pump pulley.

You do need a tool to hold the pulley whilst unscrewing. Made my own by cutting some metal..

Hi Guys, it took another week before I managed to buy a Chain Wrench which I used to wrap around the water pump pulley and to hold it firm whilst I used a Rubber mallet to hit the Spanner around the viscous coupling. The thread was a right hand thread. Thanks to you all for your advice and help. Now I have to deal with the dreaded "HDC Fault" & "Transmission Fault" & "Suspension Lowered" warning lights coming on each time I start the car.
