Replacement rear diff compatibility

I'm looking at buying a cheap replacement diff for my D3 and replacing the bearings so that I've got a good diff to fit straight away with little downtime, but had a thought about the possibility of fitting one from a D4 as they visibly look the same and from what I can see the driveshafts and propshaft appear the same. Has anyone fitted a D4 diff into a D3?

I did exactly this with a front diff.

Whilst being almost exactly identical, there was a difference in the carrier bearings.

The D3 had part No 32010X, the D4 had XAB32010X

The difference is in the machined 'lead in' radius of the inner race.

The XAB part was very hard to find - eventually I had to wait for the UK importer's next shipment from Germany, where one was included specially for me. Thumbs Up

PS, I'm sure you know, but there are a variety of ratios available. The various breakers I spoke to didn't, so it is worth double checking by getting them to send a photo of the id sticker, which has the ratio written on it.
New gearbox & TC, 3 x front wheel bearings, belts changed, new oil pump, new battery, new rear prop, new front prop, new front diff, front arb refurbed, front cv boot kit, egr blank and BAS software patch, full rear suspension / drivelive rebuild, new front arms, LED trailer light fix, split charge.
Never had a 107, 90 or 127, but have had most of the rest!

Yep, I need a 3:54 ratio, which I've seen a couple listed for the D4. Fortunately, the bearing kits appear the same too, so looking quite positive!

Hi Mate, reading one your previous posts from January about 'deep rumble" on acceleration, have you attributed this to a shot rear diff?

Not exactly Nick. In my pursuit of identifying the rumble, I've run my Disco up on a ramp and identified the loudest bearing noises with a stethoscope. The rear diff is horrendously loud and must admit I have heard it whining when sat in the back. When changing the diff oils, the rear diff oil was very silvery, so think there bearings are shot. The noise from the rear diff did seem to transmit through the drivetrain to the front so it's a serious contender. Along with that, the bearing in the front diff extension tube was quite noticeable too so I've bought one of them too, just need time to replace it. As I replace these, I'll update if there's any improvement.
