Its a very good write up

Can I just ask what symptoms you were getting which made you decide to replace the turbo, and what improvements you noticed after replacing the turbo.

Thanks

Replacing turbo on LR4 same as this LR3?

Apparently, I need a new right-hand side Turbocharger. Is the procedure the same as this excellent post?
If so, which twit designed this engine? Rolling with laughter

Been following this write up today, it’s proving very useful. Thumbs Up I just wish my D3 was this clean underneath sadly it’s well rusty and everything is seized to hell! Had to get the Oxyacetylene torch out on almost the first bolt when trying to get the cross member off. Also found a small rust issue on the fuel tank guard/support. Shocked

So you can imagine the state of the things that have got to come off for the turbo to come out. Not looking forward to undoing the exhaust to Turbo nuts tomorrow. Will be investing in a big tin of copper grease before I start to rebuild.

OK, I had a vague memory of seeing pictures on the initial stages described on page 1.
But it might been on an other thread I can´t find now.
The work worries m a bit since I am living in Sweden where salty roads make bolts etc rusty and very hard to get of...
If I start I will try to document and share the progress.

Hi,

I just wanted to add my thanks gecko_fr for this really excellent write up. I have used it twice now, first time 4 years ago and then again just this week, and yes on the same car I think, or hope at any rate, I wrongly opted for a cheap replacement turbo the first time and the more expensive one I bought this time will last longer, fingers crossed.

Anyway, I had big problems with rusted bolts etc the first time and much less this time but still one small M6 screw holding the exaust oil pipe at the bottom cost me a lot of time, as I rounded it off with a wrench and it got me thinking. Firstly, I found I could get a socket on it with a long extension and a gimbal which might have worked better than a wrench, it's not easy and there isn't much space, but possible. Then I'm not sure it is necessary to remove the pipe at this end in any case, I've seen one guy on you tube who left it in place and it is probably fexible enough to stay if you are careful.

The second trick I found relates to the air intake hose which I found to be very difficult to refit as it is held in position by a screw not far from the point of connection to the turbo. The screw is accessible from under the front fender, towards the front of the car just push the liner up a little out the way its an 8mm head. I actually broke the pipe trying to refit it and am waiting for a replacement, hoping the new one will slide in from the front and connect as it goes in, again fingers crossed.

Anyway many thanks again for enabling an amateur to do this difficult job.

Hey duncancooper, it looks you have most experience here since you done this twice Smile So Let me ask you a question.
I am about to do the same job, but there is misterious insulated pipe in front of turbo. I gues you have also LHD vehicle, how did you manage to get it out when this pipe is in the way?

It’s the steering column ! I expect

I think the turbo can come out the bottom if the front propshaft and exhaust system is removed
