replacing rain sensor windshield with non rain sensor.
My windshield will be needing to be replaced in the near future (common occurence here). Ihave a 06 HSE with the rain sensor and the heated option.I haven't tried the heated windshield in the depths of winter but it seems to be a somewhat pointless option. My wife also dislikes the thin wires running through the glass. I also have the rain sensor. I am not a fan of rain sensors in general. In my other cars I can turn off the rain sensor and the adjustment defaults to a standard intermittent wiper. In the LR3 it looks like I am stuck with the rain sensor.
What happens if I replace the glass with non-rain sensor glass? Will I get a default intermittent wiper function?
Anyone else like the heated windshield?

Hi ktm,
In my D3, I don't have a heated windscreen, and with the climate I'm in, I don't miss it.
However, in my D1, with it's poorer ventilation, I have a heated screen and wouldn't be without it, particularly in the Snowy Mtns. If I see the heating elements, it's because I'm focusing on the screen, rather than the road.
I would expect your conditions to be much harsher. However, if you NEVER use the screen heating you can obviously do without it.

A good point. Problem is I havn't had this vehicle though a winter. Before this LR3 I had never seen a heated windshield before. The defrost vents seem to blow lots of air and that seems to be the key to a clear windshield. Even at -30.

The rain sensor is also the sensor or the auto lights. You may as well keep it. I find my rain sensors work well and I never need to use the other settings.“There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

heated front screens are the best thing since sliced bread... get in car, start engine, hit defrost button, everything turns on full, wait a moment or two, windscreen clear of ice. Far, far quicker than waiting for vents to even think about doing the job. Wife hates it - but only 'cos her BMW hasn't got one and it takes ages to clean the screen!

Use heated screen lots in winter, invaluable when deicing the car. Screen ice (brushed off loose snow) is melting by the time I've done the rest of the windows, certainly well before the engine is warmed up. That's in temps down to -20c. It's almost as good as the heated steering wheel!

Ive just done the opposite mod, turned non rain sensor / auto lights vehicle into one with... Changed wind screen also. My previous screen was heated and I woulndt be without it (live in the French alps) Anywho, best way to disable it is simply remove the wire into the sensor. V easy to do... remove plastic surround of wing mirror, remove wire connector attached to rain/lights sensor. Auto lights wont work and wiper defaults to intermittent...2011 Discovery 4 HSE

Yes, I didn't want to lose the auto lights so rain sensor it is. I am still not sold on the E screen. I live in a cold climate with temps often touching -30. The thing is I park in a garage at night so snow/ice is not a problem in the morning. No other vehicle I have owned has had one and I didn't really see the need for it. My Volvo wagon clears the stuff quick. It might have a lot to do with the low humidity here.
One thing I don't care for is that I can't run the defrost vents and blow heat on my feet at the same time. It seems to be a case of either or. Again this is the first car where I can't do it. Or can I?

Low humidity would help - couple of times now I have had screens go opaque when I tried to use the washers, despite there being no apparent frost when I started out. Equally, didn't Volvo go through a period of Ford ownership too? You sure you don't already have a heated screen?!

All this talk of winter in back end of August, it's enough to drive you to drink!
Not that we've had a summer up here!

No heated screen. We replace glass here almost yearly due to the gravel spread on the roads. I can count on one hand the cars available with e heated windshields here. Strange. Anyway almost frosting here so we will see how the windshield works.

the yearly replacement and the lack of heated screens could be related...!
