The issue is most likely to be the sensor though, rather than actual water in the filter. It seems to be a common fault on the D4 which gives the symptoms you describe.
I had exactly the same and the fuel filter head/housing which includes the sensor sorted the issue.

And same here - dealer sorted it out free of charge...... at 203,450Km on the clock.....
