Rev counter constantly surging??

Hi all, Ive had a problem with my Disco 3 - im pretty sure it has being doing this since I bought it about 3 months ago but thought (hoped) that blanking the EGR valves may sort it didnt so here goes...

Generrally around 30mph + (but generally always when the car is driving up a hill or accelerating) the rev counter goes back and forth a few mm's and you can here the engine gaining and losing pwer with the revs... Basically there is no progressive climb in revs but jumpy back and forth... The way to stop it happening is to:-

1) Drive down a hill!! Laughing
2) Come off the power...
3) Accelerate hard until it changes up a gear

It will then drive ok until the engine comes under strain again then it will start fluttering again. (unless anyone understand what im on about I think a youtube vid of the rev counter may help!)

Its not really bad, you wouldnt guess there was a problem if you werent really listening to the engine well or watching the speedo as it does accelerate without too much of a problem its just a bit disconcerting....

Any ideas please, greatly appreciated?
Thanks

I know exactly what you mean, my old 54 plate D3 used to do it. Sadly, I got rid before it was fixed. At the time there were 2 suggestions, 1st was a proper gearbox oil flush, second was engine management issue. There is a post from me at the time in which I linked a video of my car performing its surge, can't link now as I am on Blackberry. Mine also had bad shudders on acceleration, and was on 120k miles at the time.

Here is a link to the Utube vid I took of my car doing what you describe. Sadly not an answer for you, but at least you know other cars have done the same.

Thanks for that Gareth, absolutely spot on, exactly same as mine. It seems no one else has ever got to the bottom of it so will leave it for now and hope that it lasts me 6 months or so until I can get it back to 10forcash when im next get back to the UK.
Cheers
