would you risk it in a brand new, untested, d4?
dealer tells me that d4 will be early, due Monday next week. I am driving to Switzerland Wednesday with two children and up the mountains. Would you take it?d4 HSE

I would take a Faultmate thing that sorts out your computer when it goes into limp mode, my new D3 did on day 4 and I have only just had it rectified with a new Turbo and MAP sensor. If anything take blankets and a survival kit and I'm not joking
I have been too hurt with the shambles of the car over the last year, I am only just starting to get some faith in it, you just need to read this forum to see the real horror stories people have to tell, not too bad if within an hour of a dealer, but up a mountain or in a desert, no way at all, for me anyway, as I have been towed away 4 times in a year and and it has been in the dealers more times, had I been up a mountain or in a desert I would have been STUFFED.
I think you are thinking because if the question, so well done for that, but WHY should you even have to think that with a Land Rover? At least this forum has shown people they are not alone with their problems.

With two children you are having a laugh.
A bit like people that head out to sea without the proper equipment because the RNLI will come and help them when they get in trouble. There is absolutely no doubt he is doing the right thing in his risk assessment, how about heads out of bums and help the man with possible problems he could face and ways to deal with it from the history in the forum, and let him work around that.
To just head off into the sunset up a mountain with two children in ignorance because it is a new car is the most stupid thing I have heard
I had two children on my car first time I broke down, a 3mth old and a 7yr old, stranded for 2 hrs then the nightmare of it being towed away and getting a rental car, that was traumatic, the car was 4 days old and that was in the UK!

The guy is doing a risk assessment, maybe plan the route, know where the local LR dealers are and worse case scenario of the longest possible wait for help, do some research on here to so if anyone has used the system in that country, use the skill of Wiggs or TFC as to what could go wrong, check on the D4 site for others experiences with their new cars, buy a faultmate from BBS as an insurance policy? What if the battery goes dead and no power in the car, a booster battery pack, how to keep warm, food, toys for the kids, extra batteries for DVD player e.t.c. WILL YOUR CELLPHONE WORK ON THE PROPOSED ROUTE, OK someone may offer to let you use their phone for the initial call but what then after that with other arrangements to make. Rent a Satellite phone? borrow one, I have one I would be happy to lend out, it just has to be thought out
All of these are common sense, I am not shattering his confidence because he has confidence to ask which is great, we can all add to his confidence by him going well prepared for all eventualities. Sorry but after going to war and fighting I like to ensure I am well prepared

Go for it, my last 3 LR's x2 D3's and a RRS i picked them up from the dealer which was based in Peterborough then drove across to hereford then the following day drove across to the north of germany without hesitation.
If by the smallest chance anything goes wrong you have LR assistance which is just as good on the continent if not better....... POT NOODLE NAVIGATION CHALLENGE 2010 WINNER
