I was wondering about the orientation of the horn vs the compressor's sealed lubrication. After consulting the www it seems that the horn can fail prematurely if not near the vertical. So grabbed a suitable handful of washers to pack-out the recess on the back of the strut. Not having a suitable length of M8 bolt with a square head I had to trim a longer one with a grinder.
So it now looks like this:

But it according to Stebel it does not have to be perfectly level; shame that these instructions did not come with the horn:
Anyway, lets hope it helps the reliability as compressor horns are not famed for their longevity!
Guess I need to edit the original how-to post.

Just purchased a Stebel horn, so will try to fit at the weekend
Love the neatness of your install, what diameter conduit I'd you use?

I think my conduit (convoluted tubing) is 7mm ID, 10mm OD. I buy the un-split kind as it is easily split with scissors if required (and they have yet to invent the 'put it back together' scissors for the times when you need a complete tube).

I went to site my Stebel Horn yesterday on a MY11 D4 in the same place as Robbie,but it won't fit behind the strut ,so I removed the twin OEM horns and decided to drill a hole and hopefully bolt it to the front of the strut

,but with it in place it protrudes too much,stopping the grill going back in place
I then decided to site it using the original twin horn bracket...and hey presto it's perfect

Still not brave enough to attempt to wire it in (even with Robbies excellent "How To") ,so I've got Kingmav66 doing it for me !cant wait to hear them :whistle:

Robbie, am I right in thinking that your set up still utilises one of the OEM horns as well as the new Stebel?

Yep, my setup still uses the RHS horn drawing power from the original relay - all adds to the noise!
Using piggyback spade connectors it would still be possible to use both the OEM horns as the LHS horn remains in situ. Indeed, the bracket for the new relay uses the mounting bolt for the LHS horn.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

Hello All,
Just a quick question, if you remove both the OEM horns to replace with a Stebel will the dual power supplies and relay carry enough juice? if not what do you reckon the combined power draw of the OEM's are?

Unfortunately my "Stebel Mautilus" has packed up
I bought this from "Nippy Normans" and have to say their service is second to none,I contacted Norman about it and within a day of returning my faulty one I had a brand new replacement

Same here Cliff - they told me try drying it out first - and after leaving it on the radiator in the kitchen for a few days it worked fine

the way you have shown the holes you drilled to mount the horn
.....if you had a drill long enough & were less than carefull or unlucky you could damage the radiator matrix
I would put a piece of timber behind to ensure this doesnt happen.
also does the original system have a relay ?
is there any chance of uprating that (if there is one) to handle the extra load ?BREXIT - done properly.

Trust me i did & also measured the length of drill bit sticking out of the chuck so it was short enough to just go into the wood and not out the otherside
