Rock slider sills v Tree slider/steps
Guys, really appreciate peoples thoughts regarding the above.
Am removing standard LR side steps and considering options of the above.
Wanted to gain opinions from people who have these items fitted (pros & cons) of each,
Before i take the plunge.
Any comments, photos would be greatly appreciated.
Regards
Kidz

AFAIK, different requirements are fulfilled by each item you mention individually, which is why you can have both rock and tree sliders. What I haven't got my head around either though is what additional protection the tree sliders offer, given the main reinforcement is already there with the rock sliders... Other than the obvious advantage of reaching higher up/further in to the roof that is...

I was very frightened when opening this thread and was in two minds whether to step back into Pandora's box...
Anyway, I beg to differ on the RLD rock sliders bit (even though I have a set). RLD tree sliders - if he has any left...
(Edited to say - the one's I've seen pictures of on here were the sill protectors with added tree-slider bar)The next American ex-pat that calls it a "truck" is going to find out what 2.7 tons feels like on their foot...

Got rock sliders on my Defender - would prefer tree sliders as they stick out a tad wider.
In my view if you're having protection then a bit extra can only be good
Are you planning on driving over lots of rocks? I don't mean gravel. I mean boulders. If so, rock sliders...but you'll also need sump guard, gearbox guard (see the one AndrewS is selling at the moment ), might want to consider doing something with the exhaust / spare / rear diff and possibly compressor guard....and maybe replace front and rear bumpers with steal jobbies. Without all the extra protection rock sliders alone are barely worth it IMHO.
Edit: Also useful if you are planning on grounding it lots on hard ground.
Are you planning on off-roading through any woodland? Especially on sloping ground? Then you might want a tree bar addition to your rock sliders (see previous threads). It will help keep those rediculous convex doors away from the trunks and root stocks a little bit...reducing dents and scratches. You can also use some as replacements for side steps
If you are not planning on off-roading near big rocks and trees then why would you want them?

D4 gone, missed but replaced with a 110 Puma.
You can combine the 2 into a single unit - Sliders - a single plate bent to fit the sill profile and bolted through the existing holes on either side. Weld steel tube to this to protrude sidewards from the side of the car and have added side door protection from trees, stumps and stuff.
I have * * units and they serve me well - other makes are available at various prices......
Available from RLD on here which a number of people have fitted and from other suppliers online such as Mantec and another company who shall remain namless run by a couple of guys and still available.

One of the things that I really like about LR is that when you step put of the car your leg goes straight to ground without hitting or rubbing the sill. Try that in a BMW X5 or X3 and you'll find that the car has a fat base. Even in the baby X3, the seat is too far inboard. That's why the X3/X5 sill is always sparkling clean - your trouser leg keeps it that way.
The D3/RRS is perfectly designed. No need for steps or stuff that sticks out. You step out with no rubbing, no stretching. Fit the RLD sliders for offroad grounding, by all means, but that's where I'd stop.
Just IMHO.

I also have a set of Ray's Tree Sliders on mine - they've already saved the bottoms of the doors, when the car slid sideways on some wet chalk (the paint's been damagd on the slider, but the doors are untouched).

At the end of the day, a 'tree slider' is simply a 'rock slider' with the extra bar attached.
('BigCarpChaser' on here) market their own version as well ...
