Rodent damage to fuel tank - how prevalent & prevention

It appear that rodent damage to the fuel tank is not unknown.

It would be interesting to know what percentage of (presumably rural) D3s are likely to suffer damage, and whether damage is limited to a particular VIN range or all cars (are D4s also at risk ?).

If that percentage is meaningful what preventative steps could one take?

Repellant

"Sheathing" the vulnerable areas

or ......

We live on a farm with 4 cats - never seen mice or rodants and my D3 lives on a yard. It went away for a month and first full tankfull of diesel and the tank leaked. Pipe got hole in it !!! Not sure how but now have a D4 tank fitted as the D3 tanks are no longer available

Thanks Chris

Did your insurers meet the cost, and if I may ask what did it cost, and how long was the D3 off the road?

Is the D4 tank different to the D3 in such a way that future rodent damage is unlikely?

NJSS - might be a topic for a poll, but a search on the site would probably reveal under a dozen cases.
If you haven't had the problem, and you're concerned about it, then you could drop the tank and take the two courses of action you mention - a repellant and a block/sheath. Think the workshop manual has 2 hours for a tank swap, so if you get a dealer to do such, work on being charged the same labour rate. If you're going to do it yourself, run the tank down and have some copper slip grease (repellant) and fine guage chicken wire (sheath) handy, plus perhaps some Tiger Seal or similar if you think you've been 'got' already (see below).

I had the problem and had the tank replaced under insurance for around £500, paying the excess and having my premium rise slightly in the following year.

As Nick (TheLargeOne) points out in another thread, a replacement involves an expensive conversion on a D4 tank, so should you have suffered a nibbled hole, you'd be quids in by having a repair done prior to taking steps to prevent a repeat.

AFAIK, all the D3 tanks came from the same supplier, and without LR issuing any kind of Technical Bulletin regarding this, one could take the reasonable view that all tanks could be susceptible to the problem.
