does anybody know if you can retro fit roof bars? how are they fixed on?

I believe you can as they are a dealer fit option.

They bolt to the roof and then the cross bars attach via a 'T' piece system spookily like Thule's.

Fitting instructions may well be on the Owners area of the LR site.
