Roof rail question & Maxxraxx bike rack |
|
Been searching, and cant find the answer....yet
Does the maxxraxx flex when full of bikes? (3 adult size, and 2 children)
I have roof rails fitted. I have read a lot of posts re fitting bikes to roof, as I tow a tin tent. Decided to go down the Maxxraxx route (5 bike), with extension.
Was wondering if i can get 2 clips that lock into the very back of the roof rails, so I can attach an additional strap to the rack.
I still have a Thule rack (4 bike) for thew tow bar, but it seemed to flex a lot, so I used to put a strap inside the boot door on my Grand Voyager.
The new rack will arrive literally the day before I need to use it, so want to make sure everything is ready to go.
Any advise and guidance appreciated.

Hi paulr5604.
That's correct, but I would like to get the correct T-clips/runners for the roof rails, so I can attach to there rather than the top boot section.
The video link on that page sees them being connected to roof bars or boot.
I had just found a set of Thule fixings for the rails, so may buy them and modify.

I've been using a Maxxrack for 10+ years with typically 2-4 bikes on it and have never used any straps. It works fine without. I carry bikes several times per week on both short and long journeys. New Defender L663 110 SE (known as Noddy!)
Sold Volvo XC90 R-Design (known as Basil)
Sold - D4 HSE (Known as Gerty)

Still original injectors and turbo

I've carried 5 adult bikes several hundred miles with the supplied auxilliary straps and was very happy with the Maxxraxx carrier.
Is there a reason why you really need to hook to the roof rails rather than the top of the boot lid?
If it's just preference then the straps supplied with your 5 bike Maxxraxx will be totally adequate until you can figure out an alternative. Personally I'd be more confident hooking under the top of the boot lid than to roof rails and think the supplied straps are well designed and made.
I don't think my Maxxraxx 5 bike carrier flexes at all when carrying 2 adult and 1 child's bike without the straps under normal driving conditions. The straps are to prevent shock loading which I guess might be caused by potholes and undulations and worth using when fully loaded. VR6 > 330D Touring > D3 HSE > !?XC90?!

Thanks Moo and Paulmeryan.
Thanks for the advise, and experience. Just thought brackets on roof would be a convenient place, as the bikes are likely to be 30cm higher due to the caravan extension
Will try it, and make a decision afterwards.
