Roof rails; pros and cons

Roofrails seem to allow the fitment of a pukka Thule roofbar set, which is nice (always used Thule). Alternatively I can go without roofrails and get an Atera set of bars that slot into the T-track. Either setup will be primarily used with a Thule sport box and separate ski box on jaunts to the alps. Head says go with rails and Thule for a more robust system, but am I right?

Any other pros and cons to fitting the LR roofrails? I may want to fit some kind of expedition rack at a later date so need to have that in mind too.
I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

If you want an expo type rack, get the FrontRunner rails, these will take just about anything although they are not as 'pretty' as the LR ones. The FrontRunner racks are a lot better than the LR expo one as well

Ok, getting more and more confused here. The LR website shows the SE as having roof rails as standard, yet pictures don't show anything I would recognise as a roof rail. My last car, an Alfa Sportwagon, had roof rails that were connected to the roof front and rear but were raised approx. 1.5" from the roofline for the length of the roof so this was what I expected to see.

Anyone got a reasonable pic of a standard SE or HSE roofrail? Or better still pics to show the difference between a vehicle with the standard factory fit roofrails and one without (lower spec models)

Cheers as ever,

ND

The roof rails are not a raised bar like on most cars. They are thin, barely noticeable strips that run the length of the roof with mounting slots in them.

Thanks Buckingham. Just found this http://www.disco3.co.uk/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=209

Which shows exactly what you describe.

This system seems to fit the standard T-bar and those cars with the roofrails if my views of Chester's directory are right?
