Hi I can't seem to find anything on this, it may just be me as I have a terrible cold and seem to be a bit off.
My rotary gear stick is staying up after I have locked and double locked and walked away and put key miles away.
Anyone know why? Is it a fault?

There are several reasons, is there any warning message on the instrument pack?
Sometimes it's a blockage in the mechanism, it could also be an issue with the P/N wire from the transmission to the shifter, it needs to match to allow it to descend.
Does it auto rotate to P when you turn off the engine in D?
Also, is there any issue when moving from D to S and back again? 1972 Range Rover Classic 2 door V8

when I turn off in D it just flashes on the D without turning to P.
Not issues with switching to S while driving and back again.
Not had any warnings on the screen. Could that be dirt sticking it?

It sounds like there's a wire come apart somewhere from the transmission to the shifter. It should be the P/N wire which allows the shifter to auto rotate to P and lower.
How old is the vehicle? Is it still under warranty? If so, I'd get a dealer to check the wiring from the transmission to the shifter or possibly replace the shifter. However if you're on a budget, I'd suggest removing the connector for the shifter and the transmission and reconnecting as it might clear a corroded pin. 1972 Range Rover Classic 2 door V8

Yeah if it's under warranty take it back in, I took mine in last week because the lights on the gear selector were playing up (either not working or flickering on and off), they just changed the whole unit no questions asked.
