Route suggestion - M5 to Ilfracombe

Next Saturday I will be dragging the tintent down to Ilfracombe for a week. First time I have done this bit of the N Devon coast and I'm not sure which way to get there from leaving the M5.
Google maps takes me off the M5 at Tiverton (J27) then along the A361 then through Barnstaple.
Is this the best route to take with a caravan?

Yes, it's a safe bet.
You can do the A39, which is much more picturesque, and use the toll road past Porlock, but the A361 is very direct. Thumbs Up

Was in Coombe Martin with the caravan last year, fantastic area. Woolacoombe beach, in the sun, is probably as good as it gets anywhere!

I use the A361 with the tintent every time we go to Woolacombe. Find the A39 to be a bit hilly and winds a bit too much at parts.

Just try and be on it as early on Saturday morning as possible. First Saturday in the Easter school holidays means it is likely to be a very popular route.

A361 Is the best way. Not sure I would like a caravan along the A39 . It's not the best.

Lots of road works in the M5 at the moment

Yep, not looking forward to the journey. Any suggestions of where to lay up if I make an early start? Coming down from Nottingham.

Stowford Farm Meadows Thumbs Up Spent some time there over the years.

Last time I was there, I had to re-build the power steering bracket that fell off my RR Classic! I had to walk up to the 'On A Hill Garage' to get it welded back together!

You used to be able to stay overnight at Exeter services with the caravan - we did this years ago when the kids were young and heading for Cornwall. Left about 8pm Friday night, down to Exeter, slept, and then finished the trip Sat morning.
