Well, I'm sitting in a main dealership, where I've come to apply for an extended Warranty for our 3 years and one month old D4. Despite it being here in this very dealership just over a month ago for it's third service, I'm having to pay £150 for an "examination" before it can be accepted as suitable for a one year Land Rover warranty. Now this vehicle has covered only 18,000 miles from new, and guess what? they've discovered several faults, one of which is a faulty handbrake. I'm being advised it should be attended to immediately, at my expense, as it could be a safety issue. Will Land Rover not pay I asked, "well sir, we'll have to see".
So, my advice would be to definitely have a Land Rover warranty BEFORE the magic three years is up, as faults are unlikely to be found until 3 years and 1 day have elapsed. To say I'm slightly miffed is an understatement !

I've had the LR extended warranty since the original one ran out nearly 3 years ago I know at £1060 it's expensive but not as expensive as if you get a major fault !
Also you get the added bonus of having LR assistance at the end of a phone and the guaranteed courtesy car which comes with it .
I have had much money's worth out of mine and shall be renewing again in Jan Thumbs Up
I never had to have my D4 inspected before the extended warranty had been accepted just did it all online Confused

^^ only needs inspection if the existing warranty has elapsed (standard warranty, or extended warranty). When I rang this week, LR said that I have to renew the extended warranty before the existing one expires otherwise inspection is needed (didnt mention the £150 though! )
They are also offering 10 monthly payments by direct debit, which certainly helps with the budgeting.

With 2 vehicle extended warranty would cost me around £1.8k a year. There is just no way that I have £18k of repair bills in every 10 year period. It would take a major run of bad luck to produce bills that approached half that amount and to honest I just cannot afford to have so much money haemorrhaging out of my accounts over many decades.

With a warranty you are paying for marketing, salaries, corporation tax, national insurance, infrastructure and company profits. The actual average amount claimed is but a tiny fraction of the warranty price.

Warranties are good for those with no real discipline when it comes to saving. Having one big rainy-day account is better value than extended warranties on all your goods and vehicles.

Well, in my view anyway.

Agree. But really it depends on the car, how much faith you have in it, how handy you are with the spanners and how much time you have to spend and inconvenience you are prepared to put with. All of those things are about you not the car.

Personally, had a 1 year LR warranty thrown in when I bought my used D4, it was faultless for a year so I didn't bother renewing. Had to do a few things myself in the second year of ownership but very happy to be warranty free at the moment and save the cash.

I had a WD warranty on my D3 after it had clocked up too many miles for the LR warranties to cover it. I didn't like that you had to have a WD engineer inspect it prior to approval being given. This could mean a delay of a day or more before you even know if they'll pay for the work required.

I have WD cover and I'm about breaking even over 3 years. but it is nice to have it just in case. Also, it covers wear and tear items, last year it had 2 new lower front arms which came in at £644 in a main dealer. No excess negotiated into my WD policy meant I didn't pay a penny. My policy that year cost less than that 1 bill.

To the OP, why are your factoring in AA/RAC cover to the WD calculation? WD give you £250 towards recovery per claim.

It is insurance and therefore there are winners and losers. Its up to you what works best for you. Dealer rates here are over £120per hour so its nice to be able to drop it in, tell them to fix it, and not worry about the bill.

May be too far for you, but Hunters LR @ Southampton are offering 4 years warranty & Creakdown with all used cars, of course you probably pay extra for the car, but decent deal IMO.....Here‘s one of their D4‘s on Autotrader
