Running a D4 on a shoestring.
Well after just over 2 years ownership and 39k on the clock, extended warranty with Landrover running out early next month, have been considering the options.
Option 1:
Continue with Landrover Extended warranty and main dealer servicing.
warranty £1060 service est £700.
Total £1760
Option 2:
Go with Warranty direct, Luxury care cover, £585 13 months cover plus £140 - £190 AA RAC for Full UK cover.
Added bonus of covering bike and other car in household, no planned European excursions, but could get short policy if required.
Independent service: £400
Total £1175
Option 3:
No Warranty
AA RAc UK cover £140 -190
Independant service £400
Total cost £590
My faith in the my 2 local Landrover dealers in the service dept is very poor, both have serviced it then had to re-do it and reduce the price as not done correctly.
(One wonders how many of Discovery failures / problems are actually due to poor maintenance by main dealers.) Both are 25 miles away, third one 50 miles away.
Local garage has looked after wifes Suzuki swift last 6 yrs, no problems, on door step and do do various 4x4's and say have all the Landrover diagnostic equip.
Any thoughts etc, am I mad to consider running without a warranty of any sort.

I don't think I am too mad, but I don't do warrantees.
I do stick the rough equivalent into a savings account though.

I took option 3 with my D3 and it worked out as the cheapest option. It had 136k on the clock and still had lots of mileage in it but was written off by a rogue wheel coming from the other side of the motorway when I was doing 70mph.

What a warranty buys you is the comfort that you're not going to get hit with any really big bills. If you can afford to take that risk - and assuming the vehicle has been properly looked after 'till that point - then doing without them is usually the best option.
Yeah, but it will cost a heck of a lot more than £2k to do that - and then the depreciation will kick in - first year will be about £10k probably.
Its why I still have my D3 after 5.5years and nearly 200k on the clock (Bought with ~60k on it) Annual depreciation is now pretty minimal, but does cost about £3k a year to keep up with the maintenance.Mark.

I don't 'do' after market warranties- they're just insurance and they have to turn a profit. I also have a good mate who found out how little they can be worth when his A4 2 litre TDi dropped the end off a glowplug. Bore wrecked, piston holed but no claim- as it was consequential damage from failure of a service item... I think Warranty Direct are better than that but there's still a heck of a lot not covered.
I'd stick the warranty cost in the bank, service independently and join the RAC. That is what I'm planning when in a couple of years I'll be in the same boat as you. You could also buy an IID tool or similar to see what is up at the scene of the failure- helps your local garage know what he needs to get ready if you don't have your own workshop.
***But*** only as long as the car is paid for. If the absolute worst did happen, you might have to be able to walk away debt-free... but that is part of running a £50K+ car on a shoestring...

Option 3 worked for me for just under six years
Apart from annual servicing at my local independent, I only ever had to cough up for a set of brake pads and discs, a pair of front wheel bearings and a full set of tyres in all that time
It only got to 66,000 miles thoughSteve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

Interesting and timely post. Had mine for a couple of months and the extended warranty that was transferred with the car is about to expire (on Wed next week). So I am also in a dilemma, extend it again (car is 4 years old, 38k miles) or just take the chance.
I am thinking I will go with another year, just in case something comes out the woodwork, then have the same debate next week. I think if I had owned it for longer, I might be tempted to go with your option 3.MY2012 D4 HSE Nara Bronze with some extra stuff

Keep hold of your hard earned money and you'll be fine with the mileage and age of yours (hopefully)

I bought mine on 64k, there was a 3 month warranty on it but I extended it to 2 years for around £550, within a few weeks the crank sensor went which cost over £1000 to replace, all done by warranty, I'm glad I went with the warranty!

I'm the same as Robbie. Save the money in a saving account, I put £150/month and have £1400 left after one year incl buying four tyres from a member for £400. I'll just keep building it up until I feel I have a safe contingency. I pay for servicing in addition to this.FFRR 2017 4.4SDV8 Autobiography. Cost so much I must be mad!
