If you google 'Cumbria hierarchy of trail routes' you can review reports for all the byway surveys. This one is not too recent though, especially considering the route is deemed to require significant monitoring.

Had a great week in the lakes drove up the coach road ,it was very washed out with 1 meter gulleys spent most of the time driving on 3 wheels ,what a shame I could see lots of off piste driving near the quarry a lot of damage ground

I was up there today on mountain bikes. Further to previous comments, I thought I'd add my opinion.
90% of the byway is very straightforward and in good condition. Towards the western end, uphill from the old quarry, there are two very washed out sections. The 1m deep (and up to 1m wide) gullies cross the route many times. There is no scope for going round the obstacles.
Whilst I am sure it is possible to do this in a D3 at present, I would suggest that this is high risk (in terms of rolling) and should be left to experienced 4x4 users only. I am not one of these so I have made the decision that I will not attempt it until remedial work is carried out.

Hi all yes to difficult for a disco got near to the top from the quarry and had to turn round and come back down would only recommend a defender with a winch and someone else as ditches very deep the drive from the opposite direction very easy wouldn't drive down to the quarry
