Sand mode

Why does it go like s..t off a shovel when in sand mode?

Any problems with keeping it in this mode for normal town use?

Sport and sand mode, can't comment as haven't tried it yet. Wonder if one cancels out the other.

Can anyone shed any light on all this trickery?

Lots of debate on sand mode many years ago, then we got remaps. Smile

The idea behind Sand mode is to lift the vehicle so that it is effectively floating in soft sand, hence the feeling of sharp acceleration as you move off, fairly rapid gear change. The effect you are trying to achieve in sand is similar to skiing in powder snow where you're trying to get the skis floating.

Sand mode and sport mode will give an even more dramatic effect which is why it's not officially recommended by LR.

You can use sand mode in normal town use but it is not officially sanctioned by LR and you could be putting additional strain on the vehicle which might be held against you if it went wrong.

Of course if you were to pay a visit to your nearest friendly LR Experience Centre they might or might not give you another name for sand mode!

Each of the Terrain Response settings has a different effect on throttle control amongst other things....so when you are on sand you want enhanced acceleration to get your momentum up asap ...so it's a bit like a mini remap Smile Thumbs Up

Thumbs Up DSL, I heard sand mode change brake effect, to prevent digging in when braking on sand. Can,t amazine one would use brakes, but above people have used D3's in sand. So in teory, not advised to use sand mode on tar will take longer to stop Whistle

This subject has been debated quite a bit over the years ...with sand mode there was no real evidence that there would be any greater impact on the vehicle when used in any other driving conditions ...and there is no effect on braking performance ...I think they would rather you get stuck than risk damage or injury by reducing your braking Smile

Terrain Response modes have no impact on brake performance. They alter the engine mapping/response and in some cases turn up HDC.

Certainly on the newer models, there is no Sport mode when Sand is selected. It goes straight to Command Shift.

Cheers,

When you move to gear selector from the normal auto box to the left hand position for command shift, it will give you sports mode until such time as you manually select a gear through command shift. The display will show S1, S2 etc to indicate sports mode rather than normal mode is selected.

Was out in a D4 HSE 2011 MY today with an owner of a D3 and we played with Terrain Response on and off road and he was impressed by the difference in acceleration when Sand and Command Shift/Sport was selected. Although the conditions off road were more suited to Mud and Ruts or Grass, Gravel, Snow.

Confused Not as I recall not tried it in the D4 yet However all D3's Black white and grey one all had a marked difference in braking responce when in sand mode the idea was not to dig the front wheels in the sand to make pulling away easier

You are correct Ken the ABS reacts different on a D3 in Sand mode not sure of the terminology but it 'winds down slower' to prevent the wheels locking up resulting in the tyres sinking into the sand whilst braking.

You can experience this first hand by driving in muddy conditions in Sand mode, when safe to do so get up a good lick of speed and hit the brakes hard, you will find that the car will actually keep driving for some time regardless how hard you push the brake pedal.
