Sat Nav

I have had my TDV6 HSE since December 2005 and I am continually amused (and equally confused) at the routes the system gives me. This includes using it soon after purchase to go ski-ing in Les Arc, France, when it decided that the easiest route was straight over the mountains and down the vallley, which in summer is probably a mountain pass, but in winter is actually a piste! But recently, my patience with it is beginning to wane as it persistently sends me on the most bizarre routes to get to the most simplest of destinations! I have had satnavs for about 8 years now, but this system defies logic! Any thought anyone?

Sorry, no advice here, but mine did the same just so you do not think you are alone or insane. £160 Tomtom one is a little better actually but the Censored repeats and repeats and repeats directions....

...and then repeats them again

I view the Satnav as a nice to have and always take it's "advice" with a pinch of salt . FWIW my Gamin GPS is about the same as far as accuracy goes .

Thanks guys! Not good when you think my old Alfa satnav was brilliant and this supposedly superior system is so daft!

Perhaps it's just me, but the LR satnav is far superior than my Tom Tom IMHO. It picks up the signal immediatley, follows the road better and give clear directions including 'what comes next'!

All sat nav systems must be treated as an aid only, especially when in country and mountainous areas.

BTW, have you set the parameters rights? maybe you will not allow it to calculate the best routes? Only a thought as mine usually gives three options. Wink

System is set up correctly and options changed when required. Yes it does give 3 routes etc, and it should be used as an aid, however, as I recently experienced on a trip from Heathrow to Dorking, Surrey, the 3 routes converged at a similar point only then to take me off the main A road and send me via the scenic route! Very pleasant but not ideal!

Hmmmmmm Sponsored by someone to take you there perhaps? There wasn't a LR dealer there was there? Laughing

Seriously though, I know what you mean, but I think all Sat nav systems have these sort of foibles in them. I just quite like the LR one, but then again it has taken me on a few pretty strange detours so perhaps ...... Rolling Eyes

Thanks guys, I don't feel so lonely now! And yes, the thought of the system being specifically programmed to maximise on the car's capabilities has crosed my mind on more than one ocassion!

I too thought that it must know the limits, as one of our journeys took us across a bridge that was 6'6" wide, so got the manual out to check before we tried, and found out the Disco is just slightly smaller than that, so off we we went, and a midgeys doodaa either side and a slow crawl we made it.....

But I think it brightens up your journey, as some of the ways we have gone, we would never have tried and seen the sights Wink
