Sat Nav Directions
Have had my 06MY HSE for 6-months now (couple of nigglies, but a great car otherwise). Had a TomTom prior to buying Disco and found directions 'fab'. Always took me on shortest / quickest route. Am finding the D3 satnav a bit of a pain - seems to direct only along what it thinks are 'major' roads rather than the quickest point. For example, in Rugby going from the station to the Hillmorton Road (a straight line), it directs you off to the right for 1/2-mile, then a left, then another left to bring you back to the roundabout you would have got to if you had not done the 1-mile detour. Another example is travelling from A43 to Rugby; it wants to direct you up the M1 rather than the A5(1 -2-miles longer), but once you turn onto the A5, it still wants you to turn right to the M1 at Weedon, then bring you back to the A5 at Crick, rather than just carry on up the A5. I have all the ticks in the boxes on the options.
Perhaps it just does not like the A5 - can't blame it

I'll have a play with the settings then. Currently have all the boxes ticked as thought that meant it would choose the best route. Sounds more like it does not quite work like a TomTom (and before anyone asks, the Misses has already stolen that). Hope I don't just get navigated on minor roads
Anyway, what's wrong with the A5. On a good run, can beat the M1 on the same section hands down (and that's most of the time). Trouble is, the Disco can't be thrown round the corners quite as quickly as the old V70 could
A5, better down your end, I have to go the other way in the mornings (Brownhills / Cannock) a bit crap up here, still better than £45 - week on the toll I suppose.

I have been meaning to put a post up to ask if anyone else thought the LR (BMW) sat nav was stupid.
My previous Tom Toms and Garmins nearly always chose sensible routes using the fastest roads and a few short cuts when appropriate. (even my mobile phone does better)
My Disco system just doesn't understand whats going on! I've got all the right boxes ticked but it still wants to show me the sights of every city or town we pass. it also seems to have a very basic way of calculating arrival times, it seems to just use the average speed for the last 20 mins or so, it doesn't appear to take any account of what type of roads lie ahead. (spend 1/2 an hour at 80+ on m'way and it thinks you'll maintain this speed through villages and on b-roads for last 15 miles of journey).
Land Rover use Karmon Hard-on for audio and Pirelli for tyres beacause they're the specialists. Why not use Tom Tom for satnav? At least it'll work properly and give us the option to add downloadable information for adding waypoints to good pubs etc...
What if the "Hokey Cokey" really is what it's all about?

well glad to see your all having the same problems,mine would be out the window by now if it wasnt built in,the other week it took me 85 miles instead of 58,and while going to newcastle from luton it tried to take me off the a1 about 20 times,but onto other motorways

Sounds like the the logic isn't there. I always bring the TomTom into the car when on journeys I haven't a clue how to get there for most of the way - inbuilt useful only when really stuck and finding your way round London (TomTom looses GPS). With map updates, better traffic info and speed cameras, can't be beaten.

Completely agree. I carry a paper map and often ignore the LR directions. And, yes, we have set the route options properly. (Oops, I started a sentence with "and".)
BTW, wouldn't you like the ability to choose "centre" (i.e., centre of a town) when setting a destination? We often want to visit a town and, not knowing the place, are stumped when the satnav asks us for the street name. How can you say that when, having never been there, you jump in the car one morning and say, "let's go to Strasbourg"?
Yep my missus has pinched my TomTom too, after coming to Scotland and her having to return back to Belgium without me she complained about the LR SatNav and promptly fitted my old Go910 into the RRS when she got back.
When we go out together in what ever car she always grabs the tomtom and starts hunting for alternative routes to go or places to stop. She is more of a GPS freak than I am.
The "Town Centre" would be a useful addition to the commands, I do miss it, TomTom got it pretty much right

I usually know how to get close to my destination using motorways, A routes etc. It's the last few miles to the street or building that I need help with. Only use the nav for these last few miles when what is perhaps not the best route is better than getting lost.
You can buy a Tom Tom for a couple of hundred pounds, so how can LR ( and other manufacturers) charge so much for far inferior systems?i

Having just completed a 1200 mile round trip to scotland I could not agree more - the routing engine just sucks. It seems quite limited in its choices of routes and the routes presented are often plain dumb, i.e. cutting the corner of an intersection of two main roads which - on paper - probably saved 5 miles but involved around 20 turns on minor roads. So on pure road speed and distance it probably would come up as "better" but in reality took about twice as long.
However it always got us to where we were going and if I knew that there was a better route then I just took it and let the nav catch up with me. IMO, you cant beat an inbuilt system for practicality. I know so many people who have had there cars broken into just becuase they have sucker marks on their screens.Also Gone : MY14 D4 SDV6 HSE : Barolo Black + Almond

That thread was about Terrain Response, not finding the terrain.
The mapping is provided by NavTeq, not sure if they also supply the routing algorithms? If you visit Lexus/Merc/Bimmer forums you'll hear similar moans about the poor cross-country route planning ability of their systems and they use NavTeq too, so there would seem to be a link.I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.
