Help, this a subject i don't fully understand,  
It appears that the D3 sat nav unit uses a different type of coordinates values compared to stand alone Sat Nav,
On many events on this wonderful site, Coordinates are painstakingly put together and then kindly handed out for others to follow, 
I had hoped that this was one job that the D3 Sat Nav unit could manage  but nope the coordinates are completely different, I think I need to return to school and do some reading 
Does anybody know why and what the difference is? 
Does anybody know if there is any way of translating coordinates be D3 friendly?  110 XS Utility

Do you mean completely different or just maybe using a different datum? If a different datum then not sure if you can alter the D3 datum but it is relatively easy on most GPS devices so could easily be changed to match the D3 - assuming we can find out what that is. Most common is still (I think!) OSGB36 from memory or maybe WGS something or other. Cheers

OSGB36 and WGS84 are about 400m. out - as we found out on Sunday when our practice casualty used WGS84 and the rescue team used OSGB36 
D3 doesn't do OS map references (as we all know) which is irritating  but it does use degrees, minutes and seconds where others use degrees and decimal degrees OR degrees, minutes and decimal minutes
So 52°30’ 30â€(dms) is either 52.517° (d.d) or 52°30.5’ (dm.m) - you need to do the maths  2006 D3 finally swapped for a 2016 D4 Graphite in Graphite grey. No mods

With a bit of googling you can find a number of excel spreadsheets that convert the various formats. I seem to recall I even found one that accounted for datum shift, although it was years ago so no idea if it's still out there. I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

What's the main problem stumpy? Calculating co-ordinates like 52°30’ 30†from 52.517° or are there datum (= how the co-ordinates really apply to the land/road) differences. (  Anyone know which datum the D3 uses
Amateur Radio fiends have programs which calculate co-ordinates to map references and then on to complex other systems AND sunrise / sunset and then on to radio propagation predictions. I'm sure one of their spreadsheets might help...

Yes calculating co-ordinates, how would I translate eg: 51.1013231, -1.7963196 in to D3 speak (or as I'm picking up now, dms) 110 XS Utility

If you can find a Casio fx-83ES calculator in Tesco (mine was £1.99!!!!!!!) you can enter the data in any form and convert it.
Look for a button marked ° ’ †which allows dms entry, and a left-arrow above it which back-converts
OR
go to

which should do it.
I tried it in my head - if you check my example the maths is wrong!

Whoops! - not paying full attention here! The minus sign is important...
The 50.17654 (say) would translate to 50° 10' 35.544" (I used the URL  ) which is accurate to about 10 thou so you delete decimals of second . This is the N figure (latitude) or Northing
The -1.7963196 is a NEGATIVE Easting (= West-ing) longitude i.e. you are West of Greenwich. The number translates as -1° 47' 46.7514" which we would modify to 1° 47' 46"W (remove decimals and - sign and add a W because it was negative.)
If you forget the W you will end up in the North Sea...
