Saxo versus Disco
Got rear ended on the A34 at Oxford yesterday. Sorry if anyone got stuck in the queue - the road was closed for over an hour while they cut the young lass out of the Saxo that hit me. Traffic came to a stop and I had my hazards on but saw her coming in the rear view mirror and knew she wasn't going to stop - tried to get into the coned-off inside lane but no time and I'm guessing she was doing something like 40-50mph. Fingers crossed she's OK, but the paramedics and doctor at the scene reckoned she would be.
Damage to the Disco is so minimal it's unbelievable - at least on the surface. I think the spare wheel has taken much of the impact so it might be a different matter underneath....
Hope everybody involved is fine. It really looks like the Saxo just slid underneath the Disco... From the look of things your driver's side reflector is the most damaged.

Hi J,
I hope the Citroen driver is ok. Her car looks awful.
This is exactly why I bought a Discovery as a family mover; its rear end height and strength I guess means it would be difficult for a lot of cars to cause too much damage at the speeds rear end shunts usually occur.

Glad all involved are fine as that's the main thing as lumps of metal can be fixed, the soft bits behind the wheels are not so easy to repair.
So was she on the phone or doing her make-up as how can you miss a lump like a D3 with hazards on if your paying attention. Maybe a lesson learnt the hard way on her part.

Bl**dy awful when you see it coming and theres nothing you can do about it, I hope shes okay, must have hit the anchors at the last minute and lowered the front end to slide under you
Had something similar play out in my rear view mirror about 18 months back. I was able to get out of the way by driving partially up the embankment. Missed me, but they just slid into the car in front if me instead. In my case the driver had some kind of fit at the wheel and I could see the passenger's terror as he tried to stop the car on the handbrake while the driver's foot was firmly on the accelerator. Not pretty.
J, make sure you get your car properly checked out. I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Cheers all, off to the dealership to get it up on the ramps this afternoon - i'd be amazed if something isn't bent after an impact like that.
Then closely followed by a trip to the physio to try and ease my neck off a bit

Deffo check car is all OK, good nobody hurt. :thumbsup:We have a love hate relationship with these veeeeehickles, seeing pics like that turn it more into love than hate.

Mine was done this time last year by an idiot in a white van - more cosmetic damage on mine, but it was all structurally ok - bloody strong vehicles to be honest....

J, I was caught up in this yesterday, what everyone in the queue was saying that it was fatal. When I went past the car, it did look bad, it looked like the fire brigade cut the roof off. It is good to hear the girl is still alive and your ok.

Saxo (like any modern car) is designed to absorb part of the hit, so that steel bends, not persons (or at least persons then taking less of the hit).
What I have been wondering how safe or unsafe is a large car like D3 qith quite rigid frame, as if the steel does not bend, it is bigger forces impacting passengers.
