Scorpion Verde All Seasons— splitting

Car in for new rear wishbones today...got a call to wander back and have a look at the tyres. Said there’s no way we’re letting the car go out with the state of your rear tyres.
I knew there was decent tread left but I wasn’t prepared for what they’d found.
Both rear tyres have split between the tread, and were on the point of failing and causing a blowout. I check tyres regularly but I’ve never checked between the treads...I will from now on. The splits are right through to the inner canvas.

That looks like a manufacturing fault. The separate pieces of rubber have not been vulcanised together.

I have to agree. I always run my tyres pretty much at recommended pressures so that’s not the issue.
They’ve never seen tyres split that way before Confused

Get on to Pirelli UK office, and ask if they'd like to comment. You might get some new ones in exchange!

It's useful for manufacturers to get feedback, and they might tie up an issue with a particular batch.

I’ve only ever seen that on old tyres that could be 8 or 10 years old. It would be interesting to hear what Pirelli have to say. I presume they would suggest over or under inflation.

Again, agreed.
Over inflation leads to wear of the tyre in the middle if I remember correctly, but the tyres are worn evenly across the tread so it not that.

Yes and your tyres look perfect otherwise so not only should they should replace them, but they should take them back to see what went wrong. I must keep an eye on my wife’s Evoque she has them in a different size.

Normal procedure with this sort of issue is to get the tyres changed and get whoever changes them to return them for inspection and credit although this will only be a pro-rata payment based on the wear

How old are the tyres?

I had similar but much less severe cracking on some Dunlops on my Fiat 500. They were about 5-6 years old.
Cheers

Bought them in November 2016, so just over 2 years old. I’d guess that means they’ve probably done between 15-20k based on my normal annual mileage

On the upside, the new rear wishbones have sorted most of the issues I was having with regard to handling, cornering and vibrations above 50mph

Thanks for the clarification. Just put these tyres on my car recently so interested to see this. I had Pirelli scorpion zeros before which had become 'stepped' on the outer edge . I rang Pirelli about this and they said to arrange for one/them to be sent back to them which they would then analyse and provide details of what had happened to the tyres. They said this was a completely free service and they would pay for shipping.
I agree with the earlier comment that , if you can, you do this and let us know the outcome.

Little update
Pirelli came back very quickly after I contacted them. I have sent photos to their technical department as requested by their Customer Sevice team.
They have also requested the tyres be sent back via a tyre dealer for examination, and aim to respond within 10 days with their findings.
I will let you know of any further info Thumbs Up

Sounds like a good first step. Thanks for letting us know. Eager to hear what they have to say (and do).
Good luck
