Seriously: it turns out the ‘5 wasn’t McGovern’s design!

Apparently, although he’s taken the credit / blame for it, the Discovery 5 may not have been his design at all, it appears to have been someone I’ve never heard of before - Massimo Frasella:

https://www.caranddriver.com/land-rover/discovery
http://www.autonews.com/article/20150518/R...-frascella
https://uk.linkedin.com/in/massimo-frascella-786a2a12 (read the list of designs that he’s claiming to be responsible for - the Velar’s a surprise).

I don’t think that’s ever been reported here before. Has anyone here ever heard of him? It appears that he used to work for Kia and was responsible for a lot of their cars, cars designed before they started building good looking ones. His explanation of his logic behind the design in the first link is also quite revealing of his understanding of the marque.

Surprisingly, he also claims that he’s responsible for the Velar Shocked

Didn’t McGovern do a stint at Lincoln? Seems these 2 have been together quite a bit.

If I remember correctly, McGovern was a lead designer for Fords Premier Automotive Group ( LR, Volvo, Lincoln, Jaguar) when LR owned by Ford

Doesn’t Gerry just oversee all the design, but has other head designers that’s responsible for various parts of the vehicle?

I expects that’s the case, with this man taking responsibility for external styling. You’d be hard pushed to know it though, as I’ve never heard McGovern give credit to, or even mention his team members - which must be pretty disheartening to those working under him.

Can't help but think he needs to read some of the tripe he writes about himself and take notice:

What about the auto industry surprises you?

Often I am surprised by how everyone tends to do the same thing. If you walk around an auto show, you can barely tell the difference between one brand and another. It is far more conservative and safer to follow the trends than create them. At Land Rover, we take great pride in being very distinctive. A Land Rover is a Land Rover – it’s highly recognizable.

The essential truth of this five- or seven-seat utility came instead from Massimo Frascella, the car’s exterior designer, over after-dinner drinks and cigars at a posh resort/bunker in the southern Utah hinterlands. “The old Discovery was an example of industrial design. The new one is a car design,” he said.

There you go. Now you know.

Always thought there were other designers doing most of the leg work. I think of McGovern as what Jony Ive is for Apple a design director who has oversight and the final say. I imagine he will set the tone and direction for the marque, brand values and design queues/intent.

And with that I still blame McGovern Laughing

Actually I take that back. While Bangle’s BMWs upset the traditionalists they were fresh and different.

Fresh? Possibly.

Different? Fortunately.

Hideously ugly? Most definitely! Shocked

I’m no BMW traditionalist as I just don’t see the attraction in them, but the front of his version of the 7 Series is still one on the nastiest bits of design of all time (it’s even worse than the back end)!
