scraping noise from back? |
|
Hi -
I'm new here, and I hope you can help me. I have an LR3 that's been really good - except -
With the windows down, I can hear what sound like something dragging on a heat shield or brake dust shield on what seems to be the right rear. Doesn't happen all the time, and it's usually at about 20MPH or so. Has anyone experienced this? My LR dealer is an hour and a half away, and I hate to send it up just for them to tell me they can't hear the noise or something. I like to point them in the right direction when possible, or just fix it myself.
Thanks in advance for any help.

I had a fallen branch jump up and hit one of the rear heatshields. It drove the heatshield against a driveshaft.
Fixed by judicious application of force.
Best Wishes,
Peter

Could be the rear brake shoes retaining pins come away or the lining come off the rear brake shoes if the back plates for the discs are ok, does the noise get worse if you operate the handbrake as per the emergency stop procedure,

Thanks for the replies -
I thought about the heat shield around the DS, but that is not touching anywhere.
I looked at the brakes, and retaining clips etc don't look like they are making contact of any kind (no sign of scraped metal on the edges of the rotor either).
I was leaning toward the e-brake, but didn't have time to take everything apart. I'll have to check the hand-brake and see if it makes the noise worse. If that's the case, I'll send it up and tell them to look at that.

the actual retaining clip comes away into the drum sometimes you can see one of the retainers missing by looking at the back plate, most likely will be the material come off the rear shoes and causing the noise

Jack the wheel up and rotate it. Failing this, have someone drive in low 1st very slowly while you follow and listen.
I had a similar noise that turned into a real metal on metal screeching - turned out to be something is the EPB binding.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I am going to try and test some of this out later today and see if I can narrow it down.

Mine was due to the retaining pin. Sorted by dealer, but took ages to find out the root cause. TDV6 SE
