Screaching & knocking sound

The D3 has started making a screaching metal on metal sound which appears to be comming from the rear RHS wheel, this has now been followed by a faint knocking under neath the noise of the screaching.

Any ideas?

Is this while driving along?
If so check wheel bearings.

yes, and dosent go away when breaking, and is less pronounced when reversing.

Luckly its in the garage on monday, is it advisable to drive in this condition?

I guess it depends on whether you want to be overtaken by your rear wheel?
What is the name of that big hill on the A38 outside Exeter again?

If there was a chance it was the wheel bearing I would suggest it would be somewhat foolhardy to drive the vehicle.
Perhaps someone else can suggest a different cause for the noise?
Could it be to do with the EPB for example?
Have you been off road recently? If so it could be a stone in the brake caliper, or a bent dust shield over the disk.

A good guide for this is "what would you say at the court of enquiry?"
Is it really worth taking the chance?

was planning to change wheels and tyres tomorrow so will look at the brakes then, the car is booked into the garage on monday in Plymouth which will involve a 40mile trip so fingers crossed its not the bearings.

If it were mine, I'd chock the front wheels, release the handbrake and jack up the rear side where the problem is, then rotate the wheel by hand to see if you can hear it rumbling, also rock it top to bottom to see if there's any movement. Either of those would indicate a duff wheel bearing.

been out and jacked the car up, when rotating the wheel by hand there didnt appear to be any movement just a screaching - will blow the brakes out tomorrow with an air compressor and see if that does it,

Will more than likely be the EPB shoes rubbing against the backplate...

Will need the rear discs off and the high points on the back plate greased Thumbs Up
