Thank you all the comments/references. My conclusion re the best bet on the engine repair is to recondition the existing via an ISO accredited remanufacturer. The Federation of Engine Re-Manufacturer (FER) have verified the QA of a specialist in Henlow who will refurbish the existing engine for a price similar to that of an unknown secondhand or recon. Importantly, with this company being a relatively small workshop (ex F1 engineer) I will be able to get accurate feedback as to what has actually been the damage to the existing engine and hence, valuable feedback to share. The process will be a full rebuild to factory tolerance. So should be good for at least the same short life as the original one!
A number of helpful comments have referred to the vehicle not having a dipstick. My better half has already pointed out that the vehicle does actually have a dipstick; it's situated between the steering wheel and the seat, it's organic!
I'll report back once outcome is confirmed.

Surely the vehicle, being early 2013 is still under LR warranty, especially as the failure occurred in December 2015? I cant see how LR have much wiggle room, a crank at 70,000miles cant be considered wear and tear. Does the vehicle have a full documented service history from a VAT reg garage?
Edit: Re-read your original post, you serviced your vehicles at home yourself which I think effectively voids your warranty terms. Not a nice situation to be in. Stories like this make my WD warranty seem like a good insurance policy!

I thought it didn't matter "where" the car is serviced, as long as it is? Cheers,

Care re comments on 'serviced myself' please (my own words used acknowledged); my discussions with JLR and warranty are not yet concluded. Servicing has actually been done via our own commercial workshop and is not the issue. JLR will accept this provided you can provide an audit trail for the consumables That is not the issue, the issue is that on recovery the vehicle did not have sufficient oil in it. To be fair to JLR, I'm not interested in getting into a debate on-line over the commercial aspect of this issue (it's not reasonable to debate when JLR can't defend it's position as the information held by them is confidential between the first parties). My reason for discussing here is merely to share and learn the engineering lessons. I like this engine and gearbox combination from a performance perspective and frankly, if the cost of repairing a land rover were a key factor in vehicle choice, I probably would have stopped buying land rovers when the first series 3 went wrong! In fact, the engine repair cost is not as serious as you may assume from the less informed in the pub. I can't disclose here, but once I've got a finally agreed outcome, I will release the details of the engineer and anyone wishing to understand the cost can contact themselves.

Vat registered garage with genuine parts is the requirement.

^ And exactly to the manufacturer's schedule i.e. the things that they say have to be done, when they say they have to be done. But as already established in this post, that isn't the issue, it's the apparent lack of oil.

VAT registered garage yes (this is to prove an element of professional attention) and servicing done to manufacturer schedules but not genuine parts, you only have to prove of "like quality" European law prevents insistence on "Genuine" parts or main dealer servicing.

Apologies for my mistake @boringoldgit. I wonder how easy it would be to prove of "like quality". I think to cover myself, I would be using OEM manufacturers for service parts to avoid that discussion. My wording above when I said genuine was wrong.
I wouldn't be a huge fan of dealers but sometimes their higher prices might be worth it during warranty periods and it may also build up a degree of good will such that smaller items not normally covered would be sorted by them.

Having just read through the thread, how did you get on in the end? 2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2
2015 - 2017: 2 x D4
2017 to date: FFRR SDV8
2023 to date: FL2 as a second car
2021 to date: Hinckley built ‘14 Triumph Trophy 1200
2022 to date: Hinckley built ‘14 Triumph Trophy 1200 & sidecar!
(One of only two known to exist in the world!)

Having just bought a new renualt master van for work you get the oil level on start up every time thought they had gone the same as Landrover but they still give you a dipstick to double check that there is oil there.
Change is not always for the better.
Good system, as soon as one of the five 0’s changes to o you need add around a third of a litre.
