Is it only the bottom parts that will be destroyed or are the valves destroyed as well?
My engine still runs but just want to check how much is needed to replace just in case.

You don`t know until it happens. It might be cheap and easy fix or it you might need new crank/block etc.

My local indi specialist also said the same. He has never had one in with snapped crank or failed bearings. You remind me of a younger me, not much younger mind...perhaps even a little older!

I've known of 2 SDV6 engine failures in the last 18 months, they were both in Range Rover Sports,
One guy had a 'tapping sound, as it was just a couple of weeks out of warranty (with full dealer service history) I told him to have it recovered to the dealer and not to drive it - new engine fitted due to swarf in the engine oil, eventually paid for by Land Rover after a bit of arguing.
Second one was 2 years out of warranty, went to a specialist and had another engine fitted.
Although neither of these were broken cranks to my knowledge, but very likely main bearing failure / oil starvation. 1994 Defender 300tdi 110 commercial

I believe later 3.0 engines have only 1 turbo, people also reported on here the euro6 engines are a much nicer drive.

Euro 6 engines were SDV6 and therefore twin turbo.
Single turbo TDV6 engines were not fitted to later D4 but to early D5
