Hi, Can a second hand key be re programmed to suit my car?? I needed another key as a spare and bought one off good old ebay! I have since been told that you should buy them new.
Please advise, and if it can be done, does anyone on here do it??
Thanks

Hi Tim,
Yes if a key has been paired to another vehicle it cant be paried to another one afterwards im afraid.
And i think only stealers can pair them!!
Sorry buddy. All things shipping, storage, transport. UK and worldwide.

Anyone with the appropriate computer device (IDS/AutoLogic/etc) can pair a new key fob- 10forcash and Wiggs are two suitably-equipped forum members (there are probably others - SteveNorman or Pete Bell). Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana

l recently ask Nick (TLO) at Yeovil and he said that you cannot reprogram a used key.

I recently went down this route with BigDave's help too.
BigDave's right, you cannot reprogram a used key. I remember reading something about there being two seperate electronics systems inside the key fob which make it impossible to reprogram
Also, you'll struggle to get the physical key cut too.
The easiest way is to bite the bullet and go to TLO for a replacement key (I can't remember the exact price, but it was over £100). It'll come to you all shiny new and pre-cut for your car. Then, a quick 30 minute trip to your local LR dealer and about £90 later, you'll have the key paired. You'll need to get ALL the keys for the car paired together.
Yes, it was a kick in the balls to fork out £200+, but I bought the car with only one key and it would have cost a hell of a lot more if I'd ever lost that one key. And before you ask.... no I'm not worried about the previous owner using his spare key to come and steal my car, because it won't work anymore since I've had the reprogramming done
On a related note, my last car was a BMW 320d which I only had one key for. I went to the local dealer and enquired about a replacement key. The guy behind the desk said it had to come from the factory in Germany and cost about £150. He then proudly announced it would be couriered via next day delivery and wouldn't need any further reprogramming. I thanked him for his time and went to walk out. Looking puzzled, he asked why I didn't want to order one.... I told him if I ever lose my key, I'll phone him then and within 24 hours I'll be back on the road

I bought a second hand key off eBay and off a different seller, I bought the blank.
My local key cutting shop had a bit of tweaking to do, but managed to cut the key.
It will open the passenger manual lock, and also in the ignition will get system check, but won't start it.
Am I now stuck with a semi useless key, or can it be reprogrammed at all?

If the fob has been paired with a vehicle, it cannot be used with another.
If the fob is "new", then it needs to be paired with the vehicle using a programming device like IDS/AutoLogic etc which dealers/independent service people have; it won't "automagically" pair with your car by proximity alone. Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana
